Ive heard of this but dont exactly know what it means. I think the default is 400 (thats what i have it set at) but ive heard 1000 is better. If 1000 is better why isnt that the default?

not better per say, but matches forward speed and so you don't lose a great deal of horizontal speed when moving forward and strafing.

it makes a difference inm bunny hopping i think, and once you get used to 1000 (i am) there is no way u can use 400.

In case the above isn't too clear:

Yes apparantly it's better. Why? Because it maximizes your speed when you're strafe (walking). You'll really notice this if you and a m8 go to a server and just move from one end of the ready room to the other. Have one of you set it to 400 and the other to 1000 and then strafe walk.
Might be plenty of other reasons, but just crank that baby up to a 1000 <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

Why it's not default? I think they forgot to change it back after a new test build wotsit. Maybe the pixies did it. Who knows <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

Yeah have you tried moving forward then strafing as a marine in cl_sidespeed 400? I cant SEE it go sideways barely, which was definately not what I originally had when I installed 2.0 (weird, eh?)

Mines set somewhere between 400 and 1000 by default. I think its 800.

All these variations might be because when you install a mod it copies your half-life cfg.

I had 400 and all, now with 1000 on all I can walk as a skulk, still make footsteps...

Didnt notice any other difference tho :o

I think if you have both values (side & forward) the same, whatever it is it doesn't affect you're normal movement, just when you walk it makes a difference. Looks to me like if you have side at 400 and forward at 1000 you go forward a fair bit faster than you strafe etc ..

yeah i tried with cl_sidespeed 1000 once, forward strafe was indeed quite slow
