Never EVER hollow, make 6 sides too, the grid you see is the maximum area you can take, usually people put the RR under the rest of the map. As for scale, create a box that's 32w 32d 72h, and that's how big the player is

the first thing i would create is a info_player_start, to get a perspective of how much space you really have to work with....

it doesn't matter where you start...

    I just made a hallway.

i normaly put my rr, in the conner the top left, or right hand conner.

RR's normaly try and express the map in 1 room. Also detailed rr's, like hera, or my own ury273, make the player go Woah!

when i map, i just lay a brush, and go from there

by background you mean environment map (sky)?

If so its a wall with the sky texture on the inside of the level and the other NULL texture...

Note: When you get to close to the map border (like 32 grid) in the editor I got the compile error warning brush not in world or something like that.. So I would say what you see in grid isnt the maximum area you can build, its all arround 32 grids smaller.

DO NOT null the other sides of the sky brush.

sky is one of the texture that need all sides to be the same.

    why?

Becuase when you add your light_env it wont light the map with the sky.

Don't put the RR below the map. The commander would be able to build there and would still get rendered to him. So put it above the Commander's view.

Actually, I believe during compile each brush is made bigger and stuff. I dunno, don't quote me on that but I heard it somewhere.
