How Do You Get Through This!?

Hey,

I have a friend at college (VCU), and they have that stupid firewall blocking highspeed where you can't DL music, and turns out it also blocks your ability to play any games online!! Everytime he uses steam, it says he cannot access servers. It didn't work back when WON HL was out too. There has got to be some kind of rights violation going into this, but anyways, does anyone know how you can get through this blockage and be able to play online?

Thanks,
rOoKe

Well, i presume to use Steam you'd have to forward the ports from the router / firewall to your specific ip, so i figure that you'd need admin privaleges to configure it, which i can also figure, he doesn't have.

It's their internet access, they can decide to restrict it in whatever way they wish, however, the IT people don't bite, tell him/her to go talk to them and ask what the deal is.

A rights violation eh? I don't remember that in the Bill of Rights. :P

But yeah, it sucks. My university does the same thing. I just got a Cable Modem, but its okay cause now there's no more downtime and the connection is 50% faster...

Your friend will have to just get his own net connection...

Generally, if it's their connection that's being provided free, he has no rights. If he didn't read the contract before signing it for service and it states 'some port blockage' or 'no servers' or 'no file sharers' or 'video games not permitted', he has no rights besides to pay it out and let it expire, and get his own ISP.

Most colleges will do this to stop their students from leeching the hell out of their bandwidth (which they likely pay a metered rate for), and I can't help but agree with the administration. If you want to suck down pirated songs, pay for your own damn connection. Don't slow down my access.

Yea, but the thing is I think he does pay a monthly fee to use the internet. I'll ask him if he signed for anything, but I doubt he did.

I bet he did have to sign something. I know I did for my cable at home. An acceptable user policy (AUP) or something. And my ISP change it now and again too.

And giving students full and unmetered access to the web would be like giving monkeys the keys to the plantation.

Well, someone posted a link (on this forum) to a utility that did something like what I imagine he needs. Never tried it myself, but I somehow remembered the name of it. And no, obviously, the link doesn't work. Use the old noggin.

Mods feel free to delete/modify that, if you don't want it posted.

Also, before you ask, I haven't got a clue how to configure the thing as I've never used it. Don't even know if it would work.
