uh...Chances are you'll still need to use your keyboard. You're limited by the number of buttons you have. I dunno, might just be me, but I think a keyboard and mouse totally outclass a joypad when it comes to FPS games

YES! The Skillz Cube connection thing? I have one of those, theyre so badass.

You can do it, but they arent enough buttons. Plus, you can aim much faster with a mouse.

It does not matter how good you are, you will not have much fun playing with a controller against other people who use the normal mouse + keyboard FPS combination.

i just what to see how it works becuse i can't get it to work i'll think it would be fun to use a controllor and i don't have a desk so my key borad is on my lap so it will be nice to get it off every so often

I've used a joystick for HL before, but it was too hard to get used to, so I went back to kb and mouse.

It might be fun for aliens, not great for serious play though.

    crouch
    jump
    shoot
    use
    menu
    select next
    select prev

Yeah, you should be able to do it.

Use a controller... on a PC? Are you crazy? Well, if you really must I'm certain there is a way to connect a controller to a USB port, I would advise against though as you not only ruin a controller doing it, but also a perfectly good USB cable.

Look people, he didn't ask for your opinion, he asked for help to get it working.

You should look for a driver (Like PSXPAD, except one that supports GameCube controllers) for your controller. You should be able to find some if you search around Google for a bit. Once you install that, it'll recognize it as a standard joystick and you can go through the pains of getting it working in Half-Life. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

Its not a question of should you be able to do it. It is why would you want to do it???
    I mean comon.
If a skulks running at you, there will be no chance in hell of you hitting him(if he got skillz)
and reverse you wont be able to manouvre as a skulk so u will get owned by marines.

Basically consoles suck **** for FPS. Use a keyboard and mouse like your supposed to.

Simple: They are not you. Other people have other preferences. Just like most people will say that an RPG is wrong without a controller... Some people will prefer a keyboard for RPGs. Don't force your opinion on what a game should be played with on anyone else. It is their preference, and he didn't want an opinion. He wanted help. So kindly shut your trap unless you have some help for the man.

For the last time you n00bs! An RPG is not an RPG without a pen and paper!

    The controller arguement is pointless!

    ....jeez. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

But seriously, I don't thing there is a controller out there with enough buttons in easy enough to reach places to handle it.

Just out of the stuff I use when playing NS.

    Requirement: 2 directional pads
    turn left
    turn right
    aim up
    aim down
    strafe left
    strafe right
    move up
    move down

Requirement: 11 buttons. 6 needed in easy to use areas.

    Fire
    jump
    menu
    readyroom
    crouch
    use
    switch weapon
    switch weapon reversed order
    Microphone
    flashlight
    map

Stop the trolling please. This guy wants a question answered not each of you jumping at each others throats. Yes I think you can use a controller for HL. There should be a USB cable that you can hook up into your USB port.

Discussion like this reminds me why I like to avoid mentioning that I use joystick+mouse combo for FPSes. The "OlOLOLol!!1 UES TEH KEYBOAERD ADN MOUSE U N00B!!oneone" comments are unavoidable. Half-Life's readme file has probably the best instructions for joystick and gamepad configuration I have seen anywhere.

there is a usb cable that converts the game cube end to a usb and thanks for your help everyone now i just have to config the "14 buttens" on the gamecube controler <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> and SK you make me sleepy <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

Here's my recommendation... Talking would be done on the keyboard since you would need that anyway. Just switch Z for voice comm if you use that.
  • BOBDololBOBDolol Join Date: 2003-10-04 Member: 21431Members
Then he wouldn't be able to turn left/right while shooting at the same time
  • bobertoboberto Join Date: 2002-11-03 Member: 6306Members
R should be Fire. L can be crouch, or jump. Everything else is probably arbitrary.

If you're fine with not being able to fluidly move around the crosshair and aim at your target, then by all means, use the controller.

But I will have to say this....it will be hella hard to control because you need buttons for the following :

    - Forward (1)
    - Back (1)
    - Sidestep left, right (2)
    - Turn left, right (2)
    - Look up, down (2)
    - Fire (1)
    - Reload (1)
    - Minimap (1)
    - Scoreboard (1)
    - Menu* (1)
    - Crouch (1)
    - Jump (1)
    - Use (1)

As you can see, you'll need 16 buttons altogether (including movement control) Not easy as you can see. It is generally is possible to play with a contorller, but with controls placed all over the controller it won't be as easy as you think.

But if you want a challenge with your game....go ahead, who's stopping you?

Control layout isn't that hard--I've played Halo (only console fps I've played) and it's quite do-able. The problem is that you have nowhere NEAR the speed+accuracy and there is no "auto-aim" in MP like there is on a console. If you really just want to sit on your couch and play, invest in a wireless keyboard+mouse.

Of course the downside is that you can run out of batteries at any moment.....would suck if they ran out of batteries during a clan match <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->
