How close does it feel to being finished
Well, 3.0f has been out for a while now and I was just wondering what the PT's think of it now. Obviously it hasn't been given an incredibly thorough examination as of yet, but in particular, is the CNS feeling more balanced and playable than in previous iterations, and is NSC feeling more mature than in previous iterations? How does it feel more/less balanced/mature respectively?
Note this is not the place to talk about which features rock and which features suck... that's what the 3.0f Changelog thread is all about.
Also this is not meant to lure out any kind of release date, but simply to get some feedback from the PT's about their testing experience thus far compared to their experience with prior iterations.

As for NS:Combat, it is currently unplayable, and we don't know for sure how the changes affected it.
Wont suprise me if Combat does turn out to be a waste, but everything does get repetive. I mean, look at regular Ns. Same tatics used almost 90% of the time. So eh, still fun though.
... Geeze man. I don't agree with any of that. Alien classes are still useless? What is that supposed to mean anyway? And your 'combat is still more repetitive then an AIM chat room' you havent even been able to properly play the current combat because of the bug. So you better not say ANYTHING like that yet.
Sad to say but i feel the same way. 2.0 is much better/fun. I hope by the time its released, my opinion will change.
Alien classes are somewhat weak, but onos is not so bad (just different game style) and overally game seems balanced (yes even without gl... with gl marines would probably win more of those "digged in" games..).
Only thing that makes me really angry sometimes is inability to use powerstrip in game (some sort of bug) to alter gamma..
I would guess that game is probably 1-3 months before completition..
What he said, completely. Fades are paper. Oni need redemption to survive long enough to use their res. Stomp is useless. Etc. upon etc. It needs serious work. I don't expect to see it before Spring, if not before Summer if Flarya wants to release something fun and balanced.
gfg redemption.
other than the grenade launcher bug, ns_nancy's ladder bugs, and balancing onos/fades, it's almost done.
No where near done.
You know, wouldn't it just be easier to have different values for Combat and NS?
X gun does X damage on NS, but X gun does X different damage on NS:C?
No where near done.

....ouch.
And by judging from what I see, and presuming that changes are in effect....then the game needs a bit more balancing and a bit more fun-factor thrown into it. Maybe putting Onos health to 850 or something. Who knows?
I should be expecting it around early to late summer. Late but if its that late, then they have done a good job as devs already
This aint the best news, but i would rather play a nice 2.01 now, and do some new strategies, than a lame unplayable 3.0
Keep on working it guys.
Keep up the good work Devs/PT's/Consties/Vets, and keep those screenies flowing

What if WON goes down before 3.0 comes out? Will we be stuck playing 2.01 on Steam, where it crashes nearly every level change?

I don't think thats going to happen.. Why? Well, the crashing would probably be a steam bug... and I was under the impression WON was going down once the bugs in steam were ironed out. So.. asuming that is the conditions in which WON will be shut down, then there would be no crashing bug.
But seriously.. What crash bug? I've played a good bit of 2.01 on steam and have a 2.01 Steam server and haven't had any crash on map change bug server side or client side.

Steam crashing with 2.01 has nothing to do with Steam and everything to do with NS. You must remember that the 2.01 build was primarily built for use with the WON system (for lack of a better term). Since very much has been changed between the WON system and the Steam system, there rose some incompatibilities with how NS handled things. This led to the numerous crashes and whatnot. In my estimation, Steam is hardly a crappy piece of software anymore and has matured a great deal in just a short amount of time. In any case, there are some quick hacks (not the cheating kind, the sloppy fix kind) that can get NS decently running and many people I know can actually go a long time even with NS without seeing it crash. Most everyone's estimation is that most of the crashes have something to do with how NS uses sound, but it certainly isn't limited to this either.
Now since we're also speculating about release dates, it is somewhat likely that HL2 COULD come out before NS 3.0 in which case users will need to switch to Steam in any case. I just say everybody switch to Steam now and learn to deal with what problems there are and cope with them. It doesn't take a super genious to get it somewhat stable either, there's a whole thread stickied in Tech Support i believe with more than enough info and step by step guides to get up and running in no time. Having played both, I can honestly say that I actually like playing on Steam better than WON now... just my opinion though and you're entitled to yours as well.
No
No where near done.

I said it at the start of CM playtesting and I'm still saying it: Classic and Combat need differant variables.
So what if the classic onos has 100 more hp than the combat one? A few nubs might be confused, oh no! It won't affect the gameplay in any way, we'll just have to put up with "OMG TEH ONOS HAS 100 MORE HPS HAX!" for a while.
