...and computers...
I was wondering what kind of system y'all are running HL on. I think the last time I ever payed attention to a required max r_speeds in a map was back when I was working on CS maps. I believe r_speeds were supposed to stay under 600, but I'm not positive about that. Anyway, I have a fair computer right now, and as long as I'm not running anything else, I can be playing on a map with r_speeds between 1000-1200 without any chop whatsoever. Please, tell me what your machine can usually take, and give me a simple description of what your machine is. That way, it will be easier for all of us to know the audience that we are making these maps for.
Here's my gamming machine specs:
Asus A7V
AMD Duron 900Mhz at 1.2Ghz
512mb PC133 SDRAM
GeForce2 Ultra
...and all the extra junk that makes no difference...

192 MB SDRAM (I think)
Geforce 2 GTS
I've never met a properly compiled map that doesn't run at 72 fps the vast majority of the time on my machine. I personally think the r_speed restrictions are a real burden but they are there for a reason. Not so much for people's system specs, but rather for their internet connection. Laaaaaagggggggg....
For example, I only have a 56k modem that connects at 26.4k. ( ! ) I can't get cable out here where I live, and dsl is far too expensive.
anyways, specs:
pII 333
512 mb pc100 ram
some sh*t ATI card for video...
oh, and cable internet...
and i know the pain of bad 56k connections, my old one didn't even get up to 5 k/s most of the time
128 RD PC800 RAM(ugh...)
NVIDIA TNT.
It's fun...
512mb pc133 ram
GF2 32mb MX
cable internet
128 ram
GeForce 2
cable
48KB DRAM.
300bps acoustic modem.
Oh yeah.
256 MB RAM
32 MB ATI Mobility M4
I've got a laptop, so my options were limited for the most part.
1 GB PC2100 DDR RAM
VisionTek GF3 Ti500
Dual OC-12 connection
(oh yeah, and my other systems...)
Athlon Thunderbird 1.33
512 MB PC133 SDRAM
ELSA Gladiac Ultra 64
AMD Athlon 800
384 MB PC133 SDRAM
Guillemot 3D Prophet GeForce 256
AMD K6-III 450
128 MB Ram
Voodoo3 3000
AMD K6-2 400
128 MB Ram
Voodoo Banshee
Oh, and my laptop...
Sony Vaio w/ Intel Celeron 900
128 mb RAM
crappy on-board video.
192 PC-133 RAM
GeForce2MX
But all this information isn't necessary, the NS mapping guidelines already tell you what r_speed values you need to keep under. Plus Flayra wants the mod to perform acceptably even for software mode users.
celeron 466mhz (overclocked to 720)
64 mb ram
adsl ( suckeh )
voodoo 3 (about to change veeery soon)
i can handle about 700 wpoly at a time without fps getting too low (under 30)
256 DDR rams
3d Prophet 2 ultra 64 (geforce 2 with 64 meg ram)
soundblaster live! 5.1 platinum
some CD rom drives and hard drives...
256 ram
Geforce 2 PRO
Cable
(so is KFC's for that matter)
Oh, I get it, I'm a fast food chain now, am I?
/me tosses ns_veil into oblivion. Take that! hehe...
j/k, of course.
It is interesting, though, that despite this 3 year old game and a few people trying to push the polycount beyond what the game itself is designed for (on any system), everyone seems to be sticking to the basics. I like that, the backwards support for older systems.

My PC is so new I don't even know what graphics card it's got anymore.
P4 1.8 GHz
764MB RAM
56K modem
I just... try to be funny...
/me cries uncontrollably
I can run halflife/cs/dod/whatever on 800-1000 wpoly. Actually, I think that the 600 wpoly rule is pretty silly. 800 would be a better one. Even I, with this ###### computer doesn't notice any slowdown on 800 wpoly.
viper: you mentioned r_speeds play greater affect with the connection, not the machine. i totally overlooked this. my internet connection is so bad i had to give up online gamming a while ago. looks like we have a mixture with the connections here.
yama & falyra: yes, i know that stuff is in the guidlines, but there is a few things about that...
1. guidlines, not rules
2. i mentioned that i recalled the last time i payed attention to max r_speeds was for cs, but obviously they did not care. just look at some of the maps that slipped past them (i don't even have to mention them).
3. sorry flay, but even if you do enforce them, i would like to shoot for something that is good for others yet allows me as much as i want. if you dont like it, i guess it won't go in a release...
flay & yama... & mole: yes, this is a little off topic. however, it does tie into mapping. also, specifically for molecular, r_speeds are like weather. they are a simple way to start conversation among mappers. when bored, someone suddenly says "hows the r_speeds on your map?" thus, we cannot stop talking about them. to stop talking about them, and only leave them in the screenies would be horrible. and not to be mean, although i know it will sound mean, you are not a mapper mole, and perhaps do not understand this concept of r_speeds.
anyway, i notice computers vary quite a bit. not bad overall, though. i'm guessing that being mappers/gamers, we are likely to have slightly higher-end machines than most people out there. i would like to point out that i do have 5 or 6 extra computers at home that i do nothing with. i would be happy to sell them to you people, as i'm currenly trying to sell them to local friends.
whew.
And do realize about this r_speeds thing...
You've got particle systems hogging video processing speed, you've got anywhere from 2 to 10 models of players on your screen at once, possibly more if the marines stick together like they should, AND you've still got the map. With -that- in mind (you -are- testing your high r_speed areas with bots in the room to get an idea of how choppy it'll be, right?) you've really got to try to keep them below 700. 1000 is fine for SP, but 700 is pretty much the ceiling for -playability- in an MP map. And if it ain't playable, no one will play it.

Well put Molec.
Edit - But just keep in mind that a small narrow hallway with 900 w_poly may actually run just fine on the average connection... where as a large outdoors areas or huge room with 700 w_poly may lag terribly on the same system. I think r_speeds are really being overrated for their usefulness in lag prevention.
