currently, ns is not OFFICIALLY supported by steam -- i.e., its seperate!

in version 3.0, ns will be adopted by the steam service, and we'll have a much easier/less buggier time while playing

steam is basically just a giant host for all the games, and when ns becomes a member quite soon, we'll see a flood of new players coming into the game!

There is no difference in the game, of course. But the system is more efficient than regular WON--It's like a lifetime ticket for gaming. You pay a huge price once (download can take very long for you 56kers <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->), but all the benefits make it all worth it. There is automatic-updating, so in case the developer team(s) need to make a quick update for a nasty bug, bam, release, and voila, it should appear when you next launch Steam or so.

WON, however, requires more downloading, and stuff, not to mention it doesn't have that awesome Friends list. H4X!

[Actually, I have no idea what I'm talking about.]

Aside from the seemingly (SEEMINGLY. There are reasons for everything, folks) random bugs and incompatibilities, Steam is very stable, user friendly, and about one billion times better then WON could ever hope to be. Honestly.

You can filter servers by region, then name.. ping.. players.. In fact, let's say you want an alpha list of all servers.. Done. Now click on playercount. You'll get an ALPHABETICAL LIST of the most populated servers down to the least populated. I.E. if two servers.. A and B are at 15 people.. then A is at the top, since it's first. Yeah, super small difference.. But it's little touches that make the grade.

Upgrade as soon as you can, because when WON finally comes down, there's going to be massive bandwith problems with all the CS 1.5 nubs who refused to bother, citing fanatical devotion to everything WON as they realize just how friggin' awesome STEAM is. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

Point: Alt tabbing in WON usually came with the loss of sound, picture, or both. You can alt tab steam easily, surf the web, and even download/install maps on the fly.

And you never get disconnected from a server either....(or only after a super long time). I know for certain you can stay alt-tabbed out for at least 10 mins, and not get disconnected, unlike WON. This is good or bad depending <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

After working with VALVe software, the NS Team can now announce that Natural Selection will be available on Steam! VALVe's Steam will allow easy and automatic updates for players with fast connections. For Steam-users, downloading patches, maps and new content will be a thing of the past.

It is important to note that Natural Selection will always be available in non-Steam form. Players will never have to pay for NS to play.

The Steam beta is publically available, and is currently allowing players to try Half-life, Day of Defeat, Counter-strike for free. Natural Selection is not available yet, but when it is, it will show up in Steam and you'll be able to play without even installing it.

The NS Team is excited about new gaming experiences possible with Steam technology, especially in creating a world that is constantly updated and network-aware...<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

The reason why there's so many compatability issues is because it's a newer version of halflife (1.1.2.0 if I'm not mistaken)
  • EpsiEpsi Join Date: 2003-11-20 Member: 23248Members
And most of the reported problems with "Steam" are actually Half-Life 1.1.2.0 bugs rather than bugs with Steam itself.

Beware however, it does seem to take up more space than it used to, and there's pretty much no reason for that one.
