    System files are the best place to hide stuff, well, except the one that contains background images XD

    Its just my folder where i keep all my junk. Such as Flash websites, todo list, digital camera pics, games etc.

    There is no security option / tab.

    xp home bites

    now I go and poke at my GFs comp <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    ok

    move the folder into your folder in Documents and Settings.

    now right click it and go to the sharing and security thing.

    there is now a box that says make this private.
  • DunsbyDunsby Join Date: 2002-08-01 Member: 1042Awaiting Authorization
    That box is not there in documents and settings, but is on desktop.
    Another thing, if i click that box it will password my username when i log on, i dont wish to do that.

    well then your screwed <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    bascialy this is how things work in windows:

    By default just about every one with an account can do anything (exept som realy high level stuff and only the admin account can do that)

    what you basicaly need to do is create a usser with a name/pw then give ONLY that usr rights to anything in that folder. So you could access it from any account you would just have to log in every time.

    If you just don't want your silly family poking at it just stick it in a place most people wont go and leave it.

    ok, I think I can do this with out going into fits of laughter inturspurced with total shock

    there is a reason why MS discontinued suporting ME.

    ME is literaly THE worst OS EVER made. I am dead serious on this, you have been taking some SERIOUSLY mindaltering substances.

    ME Eats Hard Drives (and that is one of it tamer features)

    however, to answer yuor question (my god, all I seem to do now is help people hide their pron), basicaly do the same thing.

    Rightclick on the folder, go to prefs and see if their is a security tab, if not tell me what there is.

    oh, and that is going in my sig, every one on this board will mock you for ever

    have a nice day <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    doesnt XP Home lack most of the security stuff? there has to be something missing to make it cheaper....
  • ThansalThansal The New Scum Join Date: 2002-08-22 Member: 1215Members, Constellation
    wellllllll

    the PRIMARY thing XP home is lacking is a nice UI <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    however no, most things that are in Pro are in XP Home.

    I think the tihngs that ARE missing are tihngs that most of us honestly would not use (server stuff and things like that <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->)

    Most features in pro are in home, but hidden beneath craploads of menus that makes it harder to access.

    exactly <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    it is actualy possible to quickly turn off alot of those horrid things (first time I sat down infront of my GFs comp I just sat there and worked untill I made it act as close to win2K (my OS of choice) as possible)

    I also tend to work as tech help for my friends, and the one rule I give them is that I get to turn off all of the crap before I do anytihng (I teach them how t oturn it off/on so if they WANT it back they can... BLECH!)

    oh, and I am still in shock over any one calling ME any where near a semi quasi decent OS.

    o.O

    Heres something you might want to try.

    Rename your folder to this, i.e "history" then add the code. supposedly you can go in by right clicking exploring, but i tried it and it didnt get in!! so im kind of annoyed

    you can go in through CMD prompt btw, explore should work, but it didnt work for me... i dont know. useful to know anyway

    essentially when you rename it to this, it looks like that file/folder/shortcut/program, and when you open it normally it will go to there, instead of your secret folder

    There are no "tabs" when checking properties of a folder in Windows ME. On another note, I love ME and I'm proud!!

    Vulgar, some day you'll get a real OS and you'll understand the error of your ways. You've got lots of choices!

    eediot: I'm pretty sure the entire point of having those codes is that they're unique to your computer, so the haxors have a harder time figuring out where important system files are hiding, so your big list isn't exactly useful. Even playing with them has plenty of potential to peeve off the OS.

    If you have any <i>actual</i> sensitive data, I'd recommend zipping the encryping it. With a buddy, I made a simple XOR encryption program (XOR = same key both encrypts and decrypts) in about an hour. I could share it with you guys if you really want, but there's probably more comprehensive programs out there for free as well.

    PS: XP Home usually forces you to change registry keys (or get a program to change those keys for you) to get anything done. It's really irritating. If you're going to use a computer for anything substantial, get either XP pro or 2k. If I didn't need good wireless network support, I'd still be using 2k.

    @K is bad for wireless? I am surprised ;(

    as for how to pasword stuff in ME.

    tryholding down shift or alt or ctrl (or combinations <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->) and right clicking. see if you get new options in the menu

    also tell us what all of the options are in the ME RClick?

    Note, NO ONE I know has ME any more b/c I make sure to install an OS on their machines (I don't concider ME to be an OS, instead it is a plague on IT Personel every where)
