Unreal 2 - natural selection

Justin_CaseJustin_Case Join Date: 2002-08-08 Member: 1114Members
How about starting to develop a natural selection mod for unreal2 or unreal tournament 2003? More or less the same as now just with better graphics? Because, sooner or later, and I think sooner, people will start to abandon halflife once and for all.

the reson NS is on HL is becouse HL us most played online game and most players on HL can't run those l33t games becouse they have a oldersystem like a 500 mhz system or something.

flayra have tought about it for a long time but decided that NS would be a HL game

I have a feeling the majority of the community, and most likely the team as well would like to see Natural-Selection to go on to bigger and better engines.

BUT, I think it is way too soon to realisticly consider porting NS to a different engine. I mean, Version 1 hasn't even come out yet. I don't know when if ever the team would consider porting NS, but if it does happen, the time between then and now will be measured in years, not months. But anyway, I hear the Flayra has something Special planned for Natural-Selection in the future, so I think we should find out what that is first. (this IS NOT an invitation to beg Flayra to tell us what this special thing is, if he wants us to know, he'll tell us)

Yeah I know, but they should start thinking about it already, well if unreal 2003 proves to be very popular anyway, so the halflife problem doesnt happen again. All the good mods start to come out just as people start to lose interest in half life! Ok, I know NS has been under development for 3 years, so they have a good reason, but there are lots of other mods that have started this year(or maybe theyve been around for longer but very little have changed until now)! If only they had begun developing earlier.

(this was a reply to the first reply, there were two responses before I had finished writing)

it's not about the intrest in HL
it's about the specs of the players
if you look on the valve site you can find somewhere on the sites the specs of the average HL user then you'll see that 90% of the HL gamers even can't run UT2k3 in a decent framerate

I can't follow this logic. If many good mods come out for HL, why should people lose interest in it?

Furthermore, you might not be aware of the amount of work it takes to convert a game from one engine to another. You basically need to re-engineer it.

And compatibility with slightly less modern hardware (I refuse to call something that was manufactured 5 years ago "old") is also an excellent argument to stay with HL.

Another main reason Flayra chose to do it on the HL engine, is the ease in which it can be modded and the support and help you can get on it. Heck, even with my limited knowledge of C++, I looked through the SDK, and could easily modifiy many things.

And besides all of what they've said- if you take a look at the screenshots you'll see prettiness. It looks great and I see no reason to change or remake it. Besides, I'm one of those "old" computer types. *sniff*

We've had discussions about why NS isn't ported to Quake 3, we've had discussions about whether NS should be coded on Lithtech, we've had discussions about how cool NS would be on the Unreal engine, we've had discussions about the Doom3 engine and how it'll benefit NS.

Now we're having a discussion about U2s engine.

Accept that there were, are, and will be reasons for the descision on the HL engine, and that we'll be the first to hear if Flayra decides to do a version on another engine.

Though I am one of those Psychos who burns all of his mony on comp stuff (thougH I need more RAM and a new vid card for comp #1)
I still stick with HL, part of this is simply that HL still has promise
yes HL sucks by now, however thats just the game, so long as NEW and INTERSTING and ORIGINAL mods are coming out I will still be playing

see the reason why alot of ppl are getting tired of HL is that they don't particularly like (for what ever eason) any of the 'big' mods (CS DOD etc)

I onthe other hand like all (well alot) of the smal mods, and there are still newer and better (NS!!&#33 mods coming out

if NS dies (or dosn't do all that well) I will probably reformat my HDD, buy some better specs for my comp and get into UT2K3 or osmething else

I will still reinstal HL however I will only put in a few choce mods (as opposed to every mod in existance like I do now ;D)

again though, HL isn't Dead yet, and there is no such thing as 'porting' a mod to another engine any way
what this requires:
1) new models/sprites/animations/maps etc (all new art work)
2) compleatly new code (no, I am sorry just b/c you have programed something once doesn't make it simpeler the second time if you are working with a diff system)
3) Compleatly rebalance, retweak, rework, and iron out all the bugs (this is generaly the part that is the longest/slowest proces)

so that leaves you with this for left over form the first mod:
1) the idea

ats it

HL has more players now then it's ever had, and is only growing. I'm afraid that people that think that HL is dying don't have any facts to back them up... :)

We would love to take advantage of the graphical advancements that have some out in the past few years, but we (or at least, I) would rather have the game played by a lot of people instead of being better technologically.

I haven't heard anyone complaining about the look of NS yet...

Thats because its beautiful, the best hl graphics... ever. And its actual artwork (not the way its rendered by the hl engine mind you) easily competes with every proffesional product out there right now, at least i think so.

Another reason why HL is great is because of how damn stable it is- not once have I had any problem running it much like I would other programs- no stupid error messages or ect.- it's very easy to run on our slowest computer- a 5 year old "cunker" (network name) that runs beautifully with HL-

UT/ bah who needs it-

The HL engine angers me.....whenever the game accidentally gets minimized while I am playing once I bring it back up I have no sound at all.......Its aslmost as if it is a bad mac port at times.

umm... please dont critisize the greatest achievement in online gaming of all time.. Flayra is right.. more people play HL then lots of others put together.. plus its my baby, ever since i bought 12 days after it came out with a purdy 50 dollar sticker on it.. *pets half-life cd*

Refer to DOOM's "How to kill half-life" post. I think, once NS for HL has been released (if D: ), and it very popular, it should be moved to a new engine (I suggest Serious Sam because it's mod-friendly, runs VERY efficiently on my comp even, and is DIRT CHEAP). A lot of people will move to SS because it's not very much money (pocket change will get you it). Then, other mods will move, which translates into better for all.

CS is excluded though because there are too many lame kiddies that don't want to go out and buy a cheap game.

That's something that's been known about since forever, HL just isn't designed to be minimized. I just ripped out the start menu button. (who needs it any way)

If you use gamespy or any other then that doesnt require you to manually start halflife you can just hit escape then resume game and you will have your sound back.
(When i figure out how to say this better i will edit my post but now im to tired)

Yes, it´s true, but its been this way for a very long time. All good things must end, Ive talked to many people that are beginning to get tired of the half life engine and are now turning to games like bf1942. Sure it will most likely last for at least another year, but I think its a good idea to start thinking beyond that already(note thinking&#33.

ok, as for minimizing HL, hell at least it comes back (most games tht are not designed to be alttabed outa will cease to run if you do, or they will F up the grafix to unplayable lvls)

also what moomoo was saying is true
if you can get to the start scrn of HL (where you can pick SP, MP, Mods etc) you can get your sound back. However you can only get to there (with out exiting your game) if you are runninging Game spy or some such that starts HL for you (the ONLY good thing about GS)

AS FOR those ppl you hear saying they are 'tired' of HL well you should also talk to the tons of new ppl that are joining the comunity every day
