There is no such thing as a 'best' map. There are maps that I like more than others, but that is solely my opinion. I do know that I have different views on this topic than others, which is to be expected.

Personal taste I suppose..Most of my favourite cs maps are pretty unpopular choices (india, winternights, assault2k etc), whereas "popular favourites" like dust and aztec make me want to chew my own face off to relieve the boredom..

Well, we had a discussion about this recently. At first I was like, I love one map. But then, other people started saying maps beside the one I said, and I was like "hmm, that is a damn good map also...". All that ended up happening was me switching my choice everyone 10 seconds until I just said they were all amazing, as each has their unique and very fun characteristics.

    My map is my favorite:

    ns_hollow_cube_with_single_light_source_and_textured_with_aatrigger

An instant classic; it will pwn j000.

Hmm, I was wondering, how many maps actually use the particle system?

Every map uses particle systems, and my particular favorite map is Tanith... Though not so much any more since the cool music in the readyroom disappeared...

Bast and SSN tie for first place here, but all of the maps are jewels.

yes i'll agree on this one. these 2 -from those screenies- are the crown jewels of the maps. third on my list would have to be Hera.

I've seen a snipit image of the particle system in action- could anybody please fill me in on what it is? I'm a little confused- is it a new type of system souly original from the NS dev- or is it just an enhanced "Partical System" already used before?

BTW- can anyone give me a link to a cool particle system pic?

particle effects can be seen from this movie.
    u need:
-a program/codec to play divx format.
-fileplanet account since the other link is busted.
    linky:movie with particle effects

Well, I'm far from an expert but afaik the particle system is new, or at least I don't remember seeing it in other HL mods..if you got the nstr the "bounce" demo shows some of the things it can do.

Great fun to play with btw, but hard to make it do exactly what you want..much trial and error..("well, it's snowing, but it's snowing upwards...")

    Cool screenies at

Bast, Hera, and Nothing are easily my three favorite maps (in no particular order). I was sort of forced to love Bast and Hera, because those were the only maps we played on for the first couple months or so of playtesting, and they were great even back then. Nothing's just cool because it has impressive rooms, and tight corridors, and there's always a good battle on it.

And particle systems rock. The more particles systems you can stick in your map, the better!

My favorite level, hands down, is Merkaba's ns_hera. This level is NS for me. But wait... that was Relic's ns_bast. No, hera. Bast. HERA! BAST!

    They're both truly incredible levels.

Manah also has something cooking in ns_caged as far as visuals and atmosphere are concerned. I love this level.

    Bast... HERA!!!

Hera, Bast... sounds like have a blast.

I think NS_Caged is my favorite map to command on. It gives the wiley defense-trap loving commander a lot of really sweet spots to lay out sentries and mines. Plus the hives are really tough to take, so it's fun from an assault perspective. The final version of Eclipse (as yet untested) looks to be very similar.

When playing Aliens, I prefer Bast, Nothing or Nancy, as they are creepy and full of great hiding spots, vents, and other good ambush opportunities.

For Marines, gotta go Hera and Tanith. Nice and bright, with plenty of big rooms and clear firelanes for me and my HMG.

Judging by the number of screenshots and stories from it, I'll have to say NS_nothing and ns_Bast.
  • manahmanah Creator of ns_caged Join Date: 2002-01-25 Member: 60Members, NS1 Playtester, Contributor
    Eclipse, Nothing, Bast, Hera.

Those are interchangeable ... any of them and I'm so happy I'd be a Quake 1 grunt with Quad Damage and room full or players to kill (those of you not familiar with miscellaneous Quake enemy details go RTFM ).

Although my sig still applies no matter what map I'm on, except Caged because then I can hide in my own shadows and no-one will find me

All of them, ok um but if I had to pick two... Hera aaaand... Caged, note this is only from PT stories and Screenshots.
