The 3.0 B1/b2 Beta Evaulation

the beta, not the version
I'm here to rant about what I've seen so far going on in the beta. I'm not going say anything about the version changes unless I have to.

Of course, we can't say anything without looking at conditions prior to the beta.

There was a four way-split in the community before 3.0 was released to everyone. There were the Veterans, the Constellation members, the WON 2.01 players, and the Steam 2.01 players.

Of course, this caused problems. The Vets and the Consties probably had it best, because they enjoyed almost garunteed teamwork on every server they played on, and also near-full support of the steam platform. But there's a split between them, as they have this feud going on. Then there were the WON 2.01 players, who either can't get steam working or they don't want to, but either way most vehemently hate steam. They have the worst road, knowing that they can't stay like that forever. Plus, the server browser sucks. Then there were the 2.01 Steam players, who were stuck in the middle somewhere. I belonged to this group. I much perferred Steam over WON, most especially the srever browser, but I only found one server with consistant teamwork. 2.01 Steam players like me were also that close to joining the 3.0 beta, except most of us were too lazy to send in money or join a competitive clan.

Then, 3.0g came around: the magical build that just clicked everything into place. I looked at that changelog. Even though I had no first-hand experience of 3.0, I'm good at formulating theories with little hard, factual basis, meaning that when the hard facts come along, the theories often still hold. I looked at that changelog and I was in a little world of bliss: I had that little gut feeling that it was going to work.

A little more than a week later, 3.0 B1 was unleashed upon the world, clogging up fileplanet, shutting down these forums, and causing political chaos in third-world countries.

So far, the beta has gone beuatifully, coming very close to bringing together the factions. Now, the only people who are still on WON are the people that can't run Steam or just don't like the word "beta" (no offense meant. I'm talking about people who don't like betas because they may have had a computer fried by one or something).

I'm a regular on a server where it seemed that non-regulars didn't really work as a team. I would bet 10 USD that I wouldn't see their name in the voice comms or chatbox. But now, I'm finding that almost everyone on that scoreboard is working at their mic, informing the team of what's to come.

It also seems that there has been a LOT less whining than everyone expected. When 2.01 first came out, half of the threads in this forum were titled "ALEINS TO STRNG!" Now, I'm seeing threads like "The official hivesight request" that offer rational suggestions to things that newer people might want that more experienced Consties and Vets may have overlooked.

Why? Well, It may have been the cold-blooded nature of some of the people who use these forums. I don't mean any offense, but it's like we were trained like attack dogs. The poor fool who wrote the thread asking about a release date was pummeled by "When it's done" and "Stop asking." It seems that the tough love worked, because there's less whining and more prductivity now.

That's pretty much all I have to say. Try to put the four-faction disputes behind you now, because we're that close to being together. This thread isn't about Constie vs. Vet arguments or server disputes. When 3.0 is finally released as a finished product, we're all going to be one community again.

Don't you love it when someone ends a long and boring essay with something heartwarming like that?

lol, I wish that were true. Assuming you're talking about the closed beta, they played basically like any other pub just without any complete newbies, though some of the new "vets" and bandwagon consties certainly acted as if they just started NS a week ago. Hell, some of them probably did. Skill doesn't mean much when you're playing on nameless servers with a random assortment of players. I play much more coordinated games now in the open beta that I can play on a server with regulars(most of whom are new to the beta).
