Those Nice Little Programs

That Make Life That Much Better
You know, those programs that make your computer a nicer place to be? Maybe they spruce up your desktop, or customize your sounds, or make your games crash (alright, those ones are less useful)? Post your favorites! I'll start with a pretty popular one, but something that everyone should pick up if they don't have it: Bit Torrent. There are lots of different clients, but you'll definetly want one of them. If you don't know what it is, just picture downloading everything from everyone else. It's useful for mods and game demos, for which you can usually find torrent files everywhere. If I remember correctly, I downloaded NS much faster then I normally could have thanks to torrent.

Alrighty, post your programs! From CPU monitoring to BIOS bustin', let's get it kicking! Please?

I love Media Player Classic (Sourceforge project page, look under files section for it). Just like it sounds, its like Windows Media Player before all the bloat that ruined it. I currently use it in conjunction with Real Player Alternative, Quicktime Alternative, and every other codec I have to play every video file out there.

Lots of other goodies to be found at Sourceforge, its where I always look first.

Only a few tools i rely on really that are free.

Bloodshed Dev-C++ :: Great free C++ software. It's not the best, but it's still a great help.

Wally :: Handy .wad editing program for Quake / Half-Life. Well....I'd have to say notepad or wordpad because whenever I dont have a pen and paper by me, I can just type some stuff down really fast. Or for making small notes to yourself I guess

    mullet, i second notepad.
    esuna, i second wally.

Trillian: program combining tedious AIM, IRC, ICQ, MSN and YAHOO msgers into one smooth and functional msg program. i must confess, though, i haven't paid for it. oooh, w4r3z =\

IrfanView: program making image converts quick and easy. emphasis on quick: i can open a file, convert it, and then save it to a selected folder in 3 keystrokes.

ZSNES: simply the best you can do in an emulation program. the ZSNES team has worked since damn near the dawn of time on their beautiful machine, and it has provided me with the most long-lasting and genuine fun i have had on a computer, to date.

Sonique: my old faithful MP3 player. it's currently undergoing a transition to it's second major version. i'm predicting good things =D edit: SONIQUE 2 IS LIVE!!! everyone go try it XD!!! this is like a mutually-wombed baby being born!!!

    My fav?

TweakUI God I love it. Cleans up windows quite nicely. Not as useful on XP as it was on older versions of Windows, but just the same, it's quite handy.

Bah, another one i forgot from earlier.

TightVNC :: Handy little program that allows you to control another computer remotely via a window that shows you the desktop of that machine. I use this because i'm too damned lazy to walk downstairs just to reconfigure my firewall or something.

Also, the Google Toolbar is pretty useful.

Motherboard Monitor is a great utility to keep track of everything thats going on inside your computer, including temperatures, fan speeds and voltages.

Spybot Search and Destory is a great spyware scanning utility. Picks up lots of stuff that Adaware can miss.

The Omega Drivers are custom video drivers that often include extra little hacks and performance tweaks for your video card. The ATI drivers are excellent and I believe he just started making Nvidia drivers again.

Speaking of TweakUI and stuff, I have this thing on my desktop that displays my Windows version. Is that a TweakUI option, or a Microangelo On Display one? Whichever it is, where is it?

The aformentioned Media Player Classic can do that. Look under the Play pull-down menu or try Ctrl-Up/Ctrl-Down.

Be careful with what videos you do this with though. I had my first BSOD in XP when I used this feature on certain movies.

I find HJSplit to be a great program for splitting files into smaller chunks. You can choose the ratio of each file chunk, and it rejoins all the pieces flawlessly. Great for spreading out big files.

    BSPlayer
BSPlayer offers MPEG, DivX, XviD etc. playback. A very compact, easy to use program, but also a very versatile one. BSPlayer also incorporates one very simple, yet life-enhancing feature that seems not to be available in either Media Player or DivX Player: brightness controls. MPG and DivX videos are usually intolerably dark on my computer, so being able to adjust the hue, saturation, brightness and contrast of the movie window itself is a big thing for me.

There is such an option in TweakUI
    Last option under General

BSPlayer can slow down videos as well, but not without stability problems using some codecs =)

Oh, maybe I should add something as well
I have found the Windows keys to be extremely annoying when playing games =D
With Winkeykill they can easily be disabled and then used for other things. (for example the send key in Ventrilo)
