Steam Ping Issues

First things first, apologies if this was discussed earlier. But neither searching these forums nor searching the steampowered.com forums did help.

My issue is one rather simple and easy to discribe. I downloaded the NS beta 3.0 1 and 2, also steam, installed everything and so on. Now, from software side everything works flawlessly, but when I browse the servers with steam, all tend to have a ping about 500. In game, the ping goes up and down, jumping all the time between 200 and 1000. -> Not playable.

Before steam, with NS 2.01 I had a ping about 50-150. I use ISDN single channel, 64 K. I have read the "guide how to use steam with ns" (or similar), but it didnt help. Also shutting my firewall (ZoneAlarm) off didnt help.

Any tipps?

yours, Sono

    Some questions for you:

    1. Are you on broadband?

    2. What is your rate set to?

    Some answers for you:

If on broadband, set your rate at 5000, then bump it up till your ping starts to fluctuate. I have heard many running with it at 9999. Mine is set to 6000. If your on dialup, you will want to try messing with it till you get your best ping. I found that after installing NS my default rate was like 200 or something and I had SERVER lag as you mention.

I have found quite a few that suffered from this same fate. Hope this helps...

    Cheers,

    VG

    Also, check
    cl_cmdrate
    cl_updaterate

Those influence your data-transfer rate also.

(if you keep having choke or loss, set them both to 30)
