<div class="IPBDescription">Downloads</div> ok, Windows has one thing that REALY ticks me off, and I have commented on this before:

When ever a large download wondows downloads it to a different place and then copys it to the final destination when compleate

the problem here is that the IDIOT who designed this made it so that the little 'fille moving' window pops up, steals focus from what ever you are doing AND AUTO SELECTS CANCEL AS THE HIGHLITED BUTTON.

So If I am typing (or playing emulated games where I bind speed up to SPACE) THE STUPID THING DIES!!!!

there goes my 1/2 hr, hour, 5 hour DOWNLOAD!!!!

does any one know how to:
1) Get back said file (I DOWNLOADED IT, WHERE IS IT?)
2) Make windows not bestupid about this ONE THING!

please, if any one can help me out.

Oh, and don't bother with:
1) Use a 'better' os
2) Use a 'better' browser

What I am looking for is what I said, I realy don't care if you think phoenix pawns IE, I don't feel like installing them, nuff said.

If you look in my "Cool Programs" topic, some people posted links to their favorite download managers that let you resume downloads that are canceled. I think Flashget is a popular one, but I wouldn't know. Anything important I just get off bittorrent nowadays.

Just download the file before you go to sleep, there will be no interference and when you wake up, its done.

Do a Search for the program on your computer. It could be hidden in a temp folder.

I hate to be sterotypical but... the only way I found to fix that was to switch to Firebird. It's just a default behavior, I hated it as much as you and Firebird doesn't pull that crap. I know you said you didn't want to switch but... it's really not that hard, and there is no other way to fix this. Not that I found anyway, and I looked pretty much everywhere.

Oh, and I think the reason you can't find the file when the transfer cancels is because IE helpfully deletes it from the temp folder.

it does put it in c:/windo$e/temp, but it might have renamed it. All you would need to do is to open the temp folder and do a list details view sorted by modified descending. That will show you the latest files at the top of the list, and you can check out the ones that have been created recently. Voila, there is your file (hopefully).

<a href='http://www.amazesoft.com' target='_blank'>Flashget</a> doesn't. Stop complaining about the way download managers don't work for half a second and try it. I had no problems downloading those files (or any others) with it.

I switched to Opera (skip Firebird) and it solved this problem as well, becauase it doesn't use the Windows default downloading process like Internet Explorer does.

Other than doing that (or using a download manager), I really don't see how you can fix your problem.

You say we shouldn't tell you not to bother with "Get a better OS" or "Get a better browser" - problem is, that <b>is</b> your problem, unfortunately.

I use LeechGet 2004 (Run a Google search) and have it set to identify itself as Internet Explorer 5.5. Doing that as well as only using one task usually circumvents any download manager blocking attempts. It's going to be glaringly obvious if you do more than one task though, so keep it to one.

If you wan't something done, don't be lazy and install Mozilla, it has it's own built in download manager, and no it doesn't do that stupid crap. Now of course if you're too lazy to spend 5 minutes to install Mozilla (tops) then maybe you deserve to have your download go bad on you. <!--emo&--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/mad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='mad.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I stick with Mozilla, myself.. no problems downloading, no 'jpg viruses' (which affect IE *and* Opera), and if you get the latest <i>optimized</i> compile, it's actually <b>faster</b> than Opera. The default is just slow and clunky normally as they have the optimizations turned off and the FULL debugging stuff turned on (stack traces, live monitoring, etc), which is why it takes up a bunch of memory and takes more than two or three seconds to load.
Apparently someone even makes optimized versions of Firebird available from the daily CVS snapshots (bleeding-edge) for those who want to risk it. (aka: alpha-alpha-alpha code)

That's download <i>accelerators</i>, which try to open more than one connection in order to download faster. I haven't ever heard of a site not liking a pure download manager.

And yes, I realise that you're looking for solutions to your problem rather than alternatives, but it's still worth thinking about. Download mangers make life a lot easier in other ways (not the least of which is that you can download huge files in small pieces).

This extremely irritating 'feature' of IE is being fixed in the next XP service pack. As with most IE changes that get rolled into service packs, there will also be a standard IE service pack as well for non-XP users. The new download manager in IE will allow resumes, fixing partials, not accidently undoing a 5 hour download and head-butting your PC, etc.

Basically, grit your teeth and bear it for another month or two and it will be resolved.

And Medhead, calm down and save your nasty-grams for a PM, or I will make your forum account hurt.

If you disable multiple connection downloading, or whatever the app calls it's download accelerator, you shouldn't run into any problems. Just uncheck it.

If you can configure it to only open one connection <i>per mirror</i>, you can get the best of both worlds.

what I was actualy talking about was that (atleast with getright) is that alot of, I think, php scripts mess it up (especialy things like fileplanet and home of the underdogs)

    As for Other browsers:
Again, I am ussed to IE, It is simpiler for me to update IE (I run windows update regularly), and If I am gona install another borowser I personaly want to compleatly clear out my previous browser (in this case that would be IE, and that is rather hard to do actualy).

I will try leechget over getright, however I tend to not want to use download managers when I am doing simple files (anything under an hour or 2).

Oh well, I should have known better then to ask for help on a specific thing, should have known every one would just spout out 'NO this is what you should do!'

well thats not what I WANT to do (and seeing how as the POINT of programs are to do what you want them to do..... yah)

We were saying more along the lines of "This is the only thing you can do because the program you have can't", rather than what you're suggesting. <b>Internet Explorer does not have a download manager.</b> It's not that way because it's hidden, or because a setting isn't switched - <b>it just doesn't have one.</b> There is no way to fix that, unless you download an additional program, which you are against for some reason. Because of that, <b>you will never find a solution.</b>

You had a problem. We gave you the <b>only solutions.</b> It's not <b>our</b> fault you didn't like those solutions. <b>No need to be rude to those who are trying to help.</b>
