When I got to install NS 3.0... it tells me STEAM with proper 3rd party mod support is not installed... WTH is that?

My first guess is that you didn't install HL properly, or you didn't install NS on HL properly.

My second guess is that your steam client was either improperly installed or needs to update.

Retry the installation if you think you did everything right.

If not, could you give us the exact wording of the error? Believe it or not, the exact wording (and maybe even the OS junk that may go with it) helps a lot.

You havent acctived your steam account with a valid cd key yet

start a game of HL (regular, not steam), then try to join a online game of HL. If you sucesfully join an online game of HL like this, you should be able to install ns.

Already notified him of how to get it running via the PM he'd sent me before posting this thread.

And yes, you still have to start a game of HL before you can install NS, even on Steam. Which is preferable. Because WON is going to die fairly soon, and I'll laugh at all the people who waited to get Steam working right until the last second.

The unfortunate thing is, their login server will probably be boned (As well as every other steam content based server) for the rest of us.

Not as much as you'd expect. The initial slam was because they had less than 5% of the bandwidth available that they do now. They didn't have ANY content servers set up, so everything was hammering their home network. Now, people will get offloaded to Fileplanet and such, so though we may see a hit from these idiots, it should be nowhere near as bad as the first couple weeks were.
