Looking For Consensus.....

A few ideas about new textures.
Belgarion and I were talking on #nsmapping and the subject came up of the relationship between ns.wad and ns2.wad. Basically we though that ns.wad can tend to feel out of place or more difficult to utilize because ns2 has so many texture sets. I guess i'm wondering if we should try and get in contact with Squeal and see if he'll work on completing some of the ns.wad sets. Anyways, i'd like to hear everyone else's take on the subject.

I like how ns2.wad is organized in groups. Also, it's important to have a good and consistent naming convention for the textures. Without proper names, filtering the textures can be pointless.

    Anyway... my 2 cents.

Yes yes yes! Good names, first of all, definately. Also, more 'full' textures. I mean, ns(2).wad has about 10 bajillion good 'wall' textures and only a handful of good 'floor' or 'ceiling' textures (that can be used in most places). I always find myself having to use bad lighting, obstacles, etc. to cover up ceilings becuase they're so bland and boring. I really shouldn't need to do that, a good textured ceiling should be able to work well on its own with only a little help.

What looks like a wall texture doesn't nescessarily have to be used for that purpose.. it's quite possible to make nice floors and ceilings from them.

I know, but it still would be nice to have complete sets.

Most of the doors go very well for walls and ceilings, best example of this is ns_nothing.

I'm thinking that this is a great idea to expand the ns.wad, and possibly even get an ns3.wad or maybe a new name, as ns*.wad sounds boring. Reese is correct though, they do feel incomplete. Ayumi is the wall_lab with a more blue tone, perhaps we could see textures change like that. It would be so nice if we have more wall_black textures and d6_ textures. I feel these are the most incomplete.

personally think that the ns2.wad seems to suffer a lack of colors. all grey, little brownish tones... some higres textures that vary would be nice ^^ naming system: did anyone ever gotalong with the halflife.wad naming??? it took hours to find a special texture, allways thinking of where the texture first appeared ("was it c1a2 or even c2a2... hm?")

Generally i think ns2 textures are of a higher quality. Some of the textures in the ns wad seem to be quite low quality (a small minority). Need more textures in the style of the good ns.wad textures.

Sounds like a nice idea. I'm at school right now so I can't really check out the ns.wad but the only set I can really think of is the lab set. Theres also a sorta tech set I think. Wall lab has grey, yellgrey, panel, and rock I think. I think what's so apealing about these sets (and why there were so many wall_lab maps) is that once you pick a set it makes it that much easier to carry a similar theme throughout the entire map. There are also at least two other sets not in the ns.wads that you can check out though. FAM made the set for his map ns_thea and then wrongwaygoback made the remix.wad. Both are nice sets that can be used.

Now where was I? I'd love to see Squeal make some new ns sets but it's just as good if some of the community could pitch in and finish up the sets. There are some extreamly talented texture artist out there who could easilly complete them.

SuperTeflon: I do agree though that the sets seam to be missing out on good ceiling textures. I think we have plenty of good floor textures.

Thursday: I thought Ayumi was really nice to see a variation on the wall_lab set. It's nice to have some color in there to help add to the mood/theme.

Lt.Gravity: Yeah, it would be nice to have a bit of color now and then based on the Mapping Guidelines the devs seam to be shooting more for a gritty scifi feel than the steril StarTrek feel.

About half of the NS wad textures were not made at a proper power-of-2 size, so they come out blurry in-game and in the editor. Squeal's since learned what sizes work best and the NS2.wad looks so much better because of it.
