Network, Lan And Steam

<div class="IPBDescription">I play on a LAN. What's STEAM to me?</div> Somebody help me out here. Will NS only work in STEAM, and will STEAM require an active 'net connection for a LAN server to work, and just generally please enlighten me.

Steam is promising to fix some of HL's stupider limitations, but i get 28.8kbps of high-latency unreliable internet (because I don't live in the 5% or so of Australian landmass that the telecoms give a rat's hind about).

Having said that, I have friends, and we have a three-year tradition of reuniting at least annually for a LAN party, now about 10 regulars, and since I stumbled across NS and convinced them all to have a go at it, it's become a major part of our 3-4 day sleepless gaming frenzy. We love it, we tell our other friends what a damn fine game it is, etc.

I do a lot of the organising of new games and patches etc, I know, it's perverse since I have such a crap internet connection, but that's just how it works. Problem is this: I have no freakin' idea what STEAM does, how it works, what it will require, etc. Can someone tell me what exactly I will have to do to make the final NS 3.0 work on a LAN?

yes, Steam DOES alow you to run Lan games.

Geeneraly the simple way to do this is just start up NS and then start a server (make sure you have sv_lan 1 in your listenserver.cfg)

If you want more help just go poke the guys at the Server Forum.

Oh, and every one needs to be fully update by steam before they come to the LAN. (I think)
