    Depends. Each knuckle starts at the base of the finger.

    So it all comes down to fingers. If you include thumbs as fingers, then you get 10 knuckles, but if you exclude thumbs, then you get 8 knuckles.

    If your talking about how many will hit a person, form a fist and look at it. 4 from your fingers form a line, while the thumbs knuckle is out of the said line.

    So, the cases for 8 and 10 are both valid, but 8 is more correct since thats the number your going to encounter in an average fist fight <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    This isn't exactly a subject of debate. Look at your hands and count 'em!

    what about where your finger joins your hand? is that somthing other than a knuckle? can anyone provide the correct term for this joint?

    so theres two on the length of each finger, one per thumb and an extra 5 if your gunna count the connection between finger and hand.

    that makes 14 per hand
    if toes count aswell that takes it up to 48.

    so were looking at anwhere between 8 and 48 ...

    but shouldnt a topic of such great importance and depth be in the discussions forum?

    *edit* wow i cant count*

    Including thumbs I counted 28 14 on each hand. No I'm not a freak lol I just included the ones nearest the nails; a knuckle after all is a joint isn't it? so shouldn't they be included?

    wanna know how many knucles the human has? ^_^

    wrist= 8
    thumb= 3
    index= 3
    middle= 3
    ring= 3
    pinky= 3

    add them up!

    8
    3
    3
    3
    3
    ___

    20

    then multiply by 2! since we have 2 hands! <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    40

    then do the same for your feet.

    feet have 48 knuckles.

    48<feet> + 20 <hands> = dun dun duuuuun!!!! <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Knuckle - The prominence of the dorsal aspect of a joint of a finger, especially of one of the joints connecting the fingers to the hand. (dictionary.com)

    <img src='http://www.hologic.com/prod-dr/images/hand-xray.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />

    Depending on whether you count only the joints connecting the finger to the hand as opposed to all the joints, you could arrive at 10 or 28.

    There are no knuckles in the wrists or in the toes, at least according to the dictionary.com definition.

    even with that picture I count 19 knuckles on one hand.

    5 base, 5 first, 5 second 4 third (only in fingers (i.e. not the thumb)).

    I always considered whereever your finger (and thumb) bent to be a knuckle. So I'd go with 38.

    The knuckle to me has always been the joint at which a digit joins the hand.

    Oh and if I was to punch someone properly only one knuckle would come in contact.

    your wrist isnt a knuckle....

    they consist or carpal bones....
    which are connected by ligiments....

    ligiments = connective tissue that connect bone to bone.... (dont quote... got it from bio class like long time ago so ya)
