The only problem with the Atkins diet that I see is that people can eat the horredously unhealthy food they love, as long as it has little to no carbs. What does this mean? This means that those people will order double quarter pounders, no cheese or bread. They're still getting pretty much 1/8 a pound of fat or so in their diet, and they eat these twice a day, everyday. Fast food is unhealthy, save for some places. People see a diet, see that they can eat the same food just with a few conditions and join on. I can gurantee you, they would be as unhealthy at 300 pounds as they would at 150 pounds and slurping down fast food.

As stated before, the best way to lose weight is to exercise and eat less of the grossly fattening foods. For a year, I didn't eat at any fast food place and I usually ate salads or healthy sandwhichs with moderate exercise. I lost about 30 pounds in about 10 months, still ate a lot of the food I loved and still lost weight. If there is a way to work your body out more everyday, then do it. If you get anything from others, just ignore them. They're idiots anyways. Even if you run instead of walk, that's more energy being used. It's not that hard....

In this diet, you dont eat anything for a entire week! and then another week! Just dont yet for the rest of your life and you'll be as skinny as you want to be! Granted, you'll be dead, but you'll be skinny!

I doubt half the people who make up these diets know what they're doing to their bodies or why their bodies are so good at storing that energy. After all, fat <i>is</i> stored energy (just is as a log or gasoline or a spring is stored energy.) As long as that fat doesn't get into the blood stream or effect the circulatory/respratory system in any way <i>i think</i> you should be fine with that extra 50 pounds. in fact, those with those extra 50 pounds would survive a winter if they didn't have any food while a skinny person wouldn't live for the first week.

The body stores fat so that when it doesn't have any food around, it can eat that fat and keep itself alive. the only problem is that it might not realize that there is lots of food around but still stores fat. I call it a "broken switch" effect; It can't turn off and thus continues to store fat. So... You have to find a way to put that switch back into commision or put another switch in front of it so you <i>do</i> have a way to turn it off. Surgery and/or total and radical life style alterations are the only real answers here; <b>diets are nothing more then a money pit for those who think they can!</b>. Too bad you can't change your genetics once you've been born, otherwise a doctor could just give you a shot in the arm and your problems would be solved... <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif' /><!--endemo--> <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd-->

This is most likely just a desperate attempt at a scare by the soda, fast food, snack food, obeasity factories that run corporate America.

I doubt Pepsi is very happy that 25 million less people are buying their products.

And if you're a vegetarian for anything but health reasons I will openly laugh at you.

We encourage higher standards for ethics and effectiveness in research:

We promote alternatives to animal research. We have worked to put a stop to gruesome experiments, such as the military’s cat-shooting studies, DEA narcotics experiments, and monkey self-mutilation projects. We also promote non-animal methods in medical education. Currently, more than half of all U.S. medical schools have dropped their animal labs for medical students.

I went on the Atkins diet for a month, dropped 40 pounds, and even managed to lose a bit more. I've done all I can from not eating/dieting, so now I just need to run/tone up. It's a good diet though. The main thing the diet taught me was to eat in moderation.

Did you know the "Drink 10(or 8) glasses of water a day" thing has no attributable person responsible for it.

I remember some T.V program did a report on Modern Myths or something along those lines and apparently it was in none of the Biology or similar books!

Of course if this was a Channel 4 Documentary (UK) then you can safely ignore it.

I still don't get it. So far, I have yet to see someone who was REALLY obese, and whose diet wasn't ordering the healthy burgers at McDonalds.

I don't believe in diets, because I think they're all trying to provide the easy solution, which is impossible. If you have obesity problems, start running to work, run home, then cook your own dinner. That'll work in all but a few cases (and no, working at home doesn't count <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' /><!--endemo--> )

ive been to lazy to read the whole topic but here it goes: The best diet is probably the workout-eat helthy diet (go to school/work, dont use the train, dont use the car ALL the time, plan some times to go out and just walk around), there are many diets that makes you eat less in weeks to get the body use the reserve fat, but after your done with that and you feel that you look good, you start EATING, at that time the body doesnt have any reserves, so it uses anything you eat to build up its reserves = YOU GET FAT AGAIN!.

    * Sorry for any misspelled stuff.

Exactly. When there's no energy being burned, the body does not produce energy. When the body does not produce energy, it keeps it in reserve untill it is needed. For that reason, you get fat. You can eat just as little as you want, every gram of it will be stored as fat if the body is not configured to use it.

    1) Limits your food intake. A hamburger becomes a meat patty; beef stew becomes a lone steak. A pasta dish ceases to exist altogether. You're cutting overall food intake, which is the easiest way to start losing weight.

You spotted the critical issue. The problem with obesity today is probably less that people eat too much fat or carb, but the fact that they eat too much of everything. If you do not have hard physical work, it is amazing how little food you need to eat every day in order function, and function well. If you instantly cut away 33% of your calorie intake, you will lose weight. Not fast, but assuredly.

I don't really think so. The problem is that people are so inactive that their bodies stop converting the fuel to energy. If you have a reasonable metabolism, you will have to eat VERY much to get really obese. Granted, you might take on a few pounds if they eat too much. But when you see people passing the 300- or 400-pound mark, it's not because they are eating too much. It's because they eat the wrong things, while at the same time having next to NO metabolism.

I'm sorry, but diets of any type are just plain wrong. Watching what you eat is one thing, but completely not allowing your body the proper amount of nutrients from all food groups is just stupid. The problem with America is everyone wants to lose weight, but not do it by exercise. They want the sex-pack and yet want to get it by starving themselves.
I work-out around 2-3 hours a day lifting and at my peak was also running 10 miles a day. Not even joking either. At 6,1' I looked pretty thin, but could bench easily more then my slim 190. At the end of the day I was proud of myself in a way no diet could ever make a person feel. I admit I was tired at the end of the day, but too this day I still am conscious of what I eat and would never let myself slip. People don't have to work-out like crazy, but you will be surprised how much a little exercise will help out the self-confidence. America just needs to learn that if you want something you have to go and get it.

[QUOTE]The Atkins diet may not be the healthiest thing to do to your body, but it is an effective means of reducing one's weight.

Forgive me if im stupid-accident at birth-but isnt losing weight and harming your body a bad thing? i believe it has a name-annorexia
maybie im just being too literal but it sounds like a bad idea to me

    Jragon,

It is an effective way for those who are overwieght to lose wieght. Obesity leads to diabetes, heart problems, and a host of other problems.

As I posted earlier, to harm that the diet does is out wieghed by the multiple problems it can help prevent.
