Ehm... Why? Why would you want to have earlier releases when you can have the FULL, FINISHED product?
  • AngelAngel Join Date: 2002-07-09 Member: 902Members
well its just to find differentials, like the cs old school mod reckon they got the best balance etc. and for fun!
  • QUADQUAD Join Date: 2002-07-17 Member: 963Members
Errr... OK, but I doubt Flayra will give them to you.
  • AngelAngel Join Date: 2002-07-09 Member: 902Members
like i said its for when the mods released, that way i cant interefere with current testing etc.

I wonder how much of it is left.

It's a fetish for some people. I'd like them also, but I have no intention of asking (or did I just do that?)
  • QUADQUAD Join Date: 2002-07-17 Member: 963Members
I understand that, but I seriously doubt Flayra will give them to you, the whole reason he makes the RC's is to avoid the public seeing any bugs in NS, and the RC's are riddled with them.
  • AngelAngel Join Date: 2002-07-09 Member: 902Members
thats the general idea of me seeing them, COMPARISON! CONSTANT VIGILANCE!
  • QUADQUAD Join Date: 2002-07-17 Member: 963Members
But see, the bugs are the whole reason I doubt Flay will give you them.
  • LegionnairedLegionnaired Join Date: 2002-04-30 Member: 552Members, Constellation
I doubt they still exist, unless flayra likes to keep flawed creations around.
  • AngelAngel Join Date: 2002-07-09 Member: 902Members
i want it for the bugs, thats how u learn stuff in mod / gaming scene
  • LegionnairedLegionnaired Join Date: 2002-04-30 Member: 552Members, Constellation
You're not gonna learn anything unless he gives you the source code, and I imagine that there's no way in hell he's gonna give that up.
  • QUADQUAD Join Date: 2002-07-17 Member: 963Members
Once again, I understand WHY you want them, I just doubt you'll get them.
  • AngelAngel Join Date: 2002-07-09 Member: 902Members
dazzle, you can learn quite alot without the source code,

I can't see it happening either.  Why you would want to have over a gig's worth of different versions just to see the development process is beyond me.  You'd get better information just looking at the change logs.  There are already several of these posted.

*apparently* this post has far too many replies, and flayra hasnt even seen it let, let him decide wat he does

Then theres always the chance he hasnt seen it, and might want to (now this is great, by 2mins i will no longer be a drone with 43 posts&#33<!--emo&;)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'><!--endemo-->

Funny thing though...  you, uh, won't even be able to see the bugs.  If you even did get them, there's no one you'd be able to play with.  And just about all the bugs need someone on the other team for you to see them.  Oh, not to mention the 'stuck at spawn' feature in those RC's whereby you wouldn't be able to move around in the maps unless you were in spectator mode.  And I could go on, but there's really no point.
  • AngelAngel Join Date: 2002-07-09 Member: 902Members
OH I could go on about LAN play and sv_cheats 1 if I wanted to . . . it also allows us as players to see "earlier" textures, models, sprites, HUDS, splash's, maps etc. Some of the stuff which have been wasted if not included in the final release(S).

Textures haven't changed since playtesting began, even back before the RC's.  There were numerous screenshot threads which showed off old models, sprites, HUDs, and maps.  And the splash was just the standard HL one before it was replaced.

And I fail to see how any of it was wasted.  It was a step in the 'evolutionary process' of the game to where we stand today.  Without it, we wouldn't be where we are today, and it's often best to let dead dogs, um, remain dead.
  • AngelAngel Join Date: 2002-07-09 Member: 902Members
Those dead dogs? Um, they were put to sleep, killed off when they weren't needed. Like stuffin the RC's.

yea, its always good to have the old versions of the mod  <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->

I hope the rest of the forum is listening, because somebody else actually sees the nice need for it. Who knows, in a year or two time someone might want to put together a cs old school version of ns, it would benefit the modification community if it is released aftr hte mod. Even if it is only to select people, it will still benefit us. Or maybe if the downloads are only up for 1 month then the rest is external source downloads.

They made a CS oldskool thing of the earlier PUBLIC release of CS. Wait 2 years, and bring back release one of NS. Handing out RC's which don't have everything in them and crash, wow, that would look good publically <!--emo&;)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'><!--endemo-->

I don't see the point but er... I don't think they'd give it to you anyways.... Why play the older versions? The old versions of CS (pre-beta 4) are pretty awful by today's standards...

There's a tremendous difference between CS Old School and a Natural Selection RC.

RC stands for "Release Candidate" - a build that may or may not be suitable for public release.  I dare say CS Old School is based on one of the early public releases - NOT on development code.

Every RC that is *not* released has bugs that make it absolutely unsuitable.  In some, the waypoints are severely messed up.  In others, a particular weapon/ability is overpowered.  In others, the resources are pitifully slow, or insanely fast.

Yes, I understand you want to see the bugs for learning purposes.  However, using Old School CS as an argument is inherently flawed.

Additionally, I think Flayra will be reluctant to release his code... I know I would, especially considering the recent HLRally/HL Street Racing fiasco.
  • AngelAngel Join Date: 2002-07-09 Member: 902Members
True, but i am not one to go out and make a mod. That fiasco is a mess thought, what took hlrally about a year to make code took hlsr a suspicious "3days-7days" ooooh we're not here to talk about that! Anyways, I think this topic should really be locked unless Flayra allows the RC's to "one day" go public.
