The current official limit is 275. It may drop to 250 in the future if all of the existing maps can be made to fit under 250.

200 is recommended because it's notably better for server CPU usage than 275.

    You're definitely OK at 240-250.

The absolute limit supported by HL is something like 2000 entities, but I'd only recommend putting that many in if you enjoy seeing what the highest ping that can be displaying on a scoreboard is <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Your map cannot become official if it goes over the official limit Cagey mentioned, so don't get your hopes up <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

2048 entities, but the map won't compile if more than 1024 of them are anything but unnamed lights.
