Rad And Vis Are Bugging Me

<div class="IPBDescription">req help</div> When I compile with Fast vis and no extra RAD, everything is hunkey dory but when I add "Full" VIS and Extra radiosity, Bounce and Smooth I get this:

<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Warning: ::FindTexture() texture SKY not found!

Note that NONE of these textures give me ANY lip, what so ever, anywhere but when compiling with these extra options. Also, this crashes the game with a BSE error.

Any suggestions??

    These look like they're from the Half-Life wad. Have you checked that there's no errors in the CSG?
  • SilverwingSilverwing bulletsponge Join Date: 2003-11-23 Member: 23395Members, Constellation
    They ARE from the halflife.wad but I had to extract them cause STEAM fux0rd my old installation up.

    The thing I find odd is that the BSE only pops up when I turn on Full Vis, Extra Radiosity, etc.

    When I just do a basic compile, everything works. No hall-of-mirrors, no checkered textures. Eg. the SKY brush mentioned in the warning looks just fine...

    Sorry about the long post but here is the CSG part of the log.

    <b><i>Heh, just re-read the warnings and the WAD list. The HL.wad isn't there... Still odd that it SOMETIMES work...</i></b>

    Well, then that's the problem. Seems that it can't find halflife.wad or something. I could send you my halflife.wad if you want. It's from the WON install.

    Yeah, there are faces in your map that have been textured with textures from halflife.wad, but your map contains no actual reference to the file or location, giving the compiler no wadfile to use. You need to find halflife.wad (from your old won install, or from a friend) and add it in the textures menu in VHE.

    I get this alot. I export my map to a different directory and the missing texture errors go away. Here's what I say about it in my Common Errors thread:

    <!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->edit: [2/05/04]

    I have discovered that BSE will also occur if HL can't find the textures listed in the editor. In my case I had my STEAM install on my G Drive and my Map File on my J Drive. The compiler/engine was looking in J:\Program Files\Sierra\Half-Life\ns\ instead of G:\Program Files\SteamApps\ghostsyphoid@zerodimention.com\half-life\ns. This is because (I believe) the compiler drops the drive letter and just grabs whatever letter the map file resides on, regardless of your specifications in VHE's texture selector dialog. Not sure on this but there should be a texture error reported from CSG in this case so make sure to check your compile log. It would read something like:

    LoadLump()MissingTexture

    or similar.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    I don't know the actual inner workings of the compiler, that's just my theory on the matter. Like I said, try exporting your .map file to a totally different directory and see if this stops it.

    It's actually the RMF->MAP process that VHE uses that drops the drive letter when it writes wad locations to the map for processing, but you're right about the compiler not checking the correct drive.

    The drive that it checks is the current working drive, which may be set to the map's drive by worldcraft in basic mode.

    In addition, the tools can't process a file inside a directory containing a '.' character on Windows systems due to a bug in the file handler. I've fixed the bug for p14.

    It says in your log that you are using: hlbsp v2.5.3 rel Custom Build 1.7<span style='color:red'><b>p12</b></span> (Oct 7 2003), the same set as me. (Though I'm upgrading to the latest over the weekend to come.) This means we are both having a similar problem, have you tried moving your map file yet? It always works for me.

    Or...

    Reinstall (and patch) WON Half-Life and compile your maps to that install and copy the BSP over to STEAM then manually.

    I'm just babbling now...

    Note the file handler isn't parsing the '.' in the email correctly?

    The wad files are being opened without incident, but the file names are mangled. In the case of map files in a directory with a '.', the reconstructed name is used to attempt to open the file with a different extension. This causes the tools to fail miserably on Windows systems, and has been a bug since Valve's original SDK release.

    You have two possible ways to move forward: listen to the co-author of the program you're having difficulties with, or ignore the expert and assume that you're right. If you want to solve your problem, I suggest the former.

    I also was responding to somebody else with the STEAM extraction comment since they mentioned the unnecessary step of getting the (large) file from somebody else. Believe it or not, I do like to give other people advice and correct any apparently misguided notions that I see even when it's in your thread.

    The obvious solution to your problem would be checking the .map file's wad attribute for the worldspawn entity to see if the halflife.wad is in the listing. If it is in the listing, the information is being corrupted.

    Ah, maybe I am reading you wrong (again) but you seem a little hostile in that suggestion. I was simply pointing out the oddity. I will try putting the wads in a directory without the '.' in the path. I do not simply assume I am right. You are the guru here, I can't even make my map compile. Why would I assume superiority? I am asking a question and are being puzzled by your answer. Now that you have spelled it out for me, I see what you were saying.

    and what I have in my wad list is affected by this yet those textures are fine unless I use halflife.wad. Thus my remark about having p14. I just didnt <i>get</i> what you were talking about.

    I want to apologize for misunderstanding your intent -- I read something into your post that you didn't mean; when you said "in that case I must have p14" I thought you were sarcastic since I haven't released p14 for anybody to use yet. It seemed to me you were trying to second-guess or correct what I was saying rather than asking for clarification when you said you had no problem.

    Since I jumped the gun (and again I apologize for misreading your tone), I'd be willing to continue working with you to troubleshoot the problem if you'd like. I'm usually not such a jerk to new posters, and would like to be 100% sure there isn't an actual bug causing your problem.

    Ah, now I feel better. I thought I had stepped on some toes.

    I tried simply moving the wads I use to another dir, one without the '.'.

    This seems to have worked. I will try compiling again during the night and see if it still works with the settings that gave me the initial problem.

    It worked with Fast vis and basic RAD though.

    XP, I always read your posts and I love em. 90% of it is far beyond me but still, you write well and are always ready to help. It was a little disheartening to be jumped upon by you but it seems I was correct in assuming a misunderstanding.

    No offence taken. Thank you for your assistance, I will let you know if the full compile is b0rked...
