PROBLEM: New Commanders, They never can get practice and when they do unfortuantly it has to be in a game where they will have people yelling at them and too much stuff going on.

SOLUTION: Have a single player map(Commander Boot Camp) that will allow a person to play comm offline this will allow the new commander to get a feel for what it is like being comm.

****RECOMENDATIONS FOR SOLUTION: Have it so a Narrator will tell the new comm what to do like "Drop Armory" and "Upgrade to Advanced Armory" Of course the narrator will tell him how to do this also. And at the end when he has done everything he can , Have everything reset so he can practice building without the narrator and building in different orders and stuff like that. Would also be usefull if you can allow him to build on any map he picks like eclipse and stuff so he can get to know the map and where everything is.

My recommendation is for people to play other RTS games to get an idea of what it's like, then read the manual to know what everything is and does, then watch other people command, THEN play as commander. It's not as hard as it sounds.

Yes, being commander on a pub is as much about people management and communication skills as tactics and clicking the right buttons.

Learn the game, see the chair, communicate with the team (explaining that your new and requesting the teams permision to try) and then just go fo it. Ideally you'll have a helpful field commander guiding your tactics so for the first few games all you have to do is follow orders and drop stuff in the right place.

Having said that a single player training game would be a cool addition. One day.

I think this is a semi-good idea. I would say good idea, but I just don't think somebody could create a simulator to make a good commander. About all they could learn is what each building does, and what it allows you to do. Thats about it. It can't really tell him when he should upgrade the adv armory. Can't tell him where he should try and secure, you know common public server strats and the like. I just don't think something could be created to give them that kind of experience.

Norml has a point. Playing on pub servers means playing with different teammates, which all have different opinions on what is right to research and at what time. Tutorials and manuals can only go as far as teaching comms-to-be the basis of the tech tree and resource management. Developing a style of commanding is all up to you.

An offline commander tutorial sounds like a great idea though, and perhaps one day it will be implimented. Until then, just hop onto a LAN game, slap sv_cheats on and go with it. Not to mention servers specifically set up for training commanders; I don't know of any meself, but I'm sure there are threads in this forum where they are listed.

The training camp map is a good idea.

What i suggest to new commanders, is the practice in other RTS, especially Starcraft <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' /><!--endemo--> then, look what the commander does, listening to his orders, staying in base seeing what he does. After that, ask to try. But ask another regular commander to help you, and be quick to exit CC if things are getting worse.

Remember that every icon is accessible from the keyboard, qweasdzxc are the Standard binded keys.

good ideas but you left one thing out... the 2 week apprentice Commander time period. This is critical to developing commander skills as you see exactly what a good comm (or bad comm) does in certian situations so you know what you should/shouldn't do.

This actually works, I use to play alot of RTS game's before I tried commanding back in 1.00. It was pretty simple layout, all I had to do is learn the correct strategies, make my own and I ended up winning my first 2 round's on that server.

The boot camp map or whatever isn't meant to teach you how to become the best commander in the game. its just there to let you get a grasp on how to command.

Cause seriously people who play games to play games will not read the readme file or a document on it they just wanna play, This will allow them to learn how to play a commander without having to read 7 pages on it or whatnot.
