mmmmmmmm

just remembered one of my trials and tribulations with the older generation.

Full set up:
Family Friend that lives down the block from us. I Met Him and his Life partner a few years ago and just recently his life partner die (very sad event, for all involved).

However recently he has decided to start becoming computer litterate (so as to keep in touch with alot of people he knows). He ussed to have this little email machine (yah know, they charge you nearly as much as broad band and all you can do it write email?). So he eventualy decided to stop paying as much and switched over to a Dell with AOL (2 personal pet peeves, however for him they are just what he needed, so meh).

My Job consists of Teaching him the basics....
This consisted of sitting in his basement and teaching myself/him how to use AOL...
Things ranging from:
Off Line Mail sesions (you know, go online for a half sec, download new mail and send out composed mail, you do this once or twice a day, its good for dialup)
Mail folder use, adress book (I unfortunatly gave him my email and now get the random spam he fowards )
How to C&P...

That was actualy one of the hardest things to do. Aparently alot of people have the problem of understanding how the RMB works as a dynamic menu that will probably let you do what ever you are trying to do atm.

Fuinaly came down to teaching him by rote Shift+click-->edit-->copy etc.

Oh well, he can do the basics now (and he calls my mom when he needs help, seeing how I am outa state now )

My dad's definatly computer literate. He's built 4+ computers, networked together 3 computers as a home LAN, fixed problems that have cropped up with them.

He mainly plays RTS's, athough he did start playing DoD as Old Man. He played Wolfinstien 3D and spent hours checking the walls for secrets, and still never got them all...

He types well, is quick in Excel and can use AutoCAD.

My mum can check e-mail, browse the web and word process. Thats about it.

Hehe, my dad used to program on punch cards. He said it got a little scary when you could look at a punch card and know about where it was supposed to go in the stack. So we always had fairly top-of-the-line computers in the house when i lived there (course, now he's running a dual Athlon MP, and might have me put him together a dual Opteron system when I go visit next). He never plays games though, just programs and runs simulations and whatnot. My mom can navigate well enough. All she does is surf the web, check email, and to finances/taxes on the comp.

My pop still uses a Westinghouse manual typewriter. He will die without ever having touched a computer, I fear.

For those that have no idea what a typewriter is, here's one similar to his... I'm pretty sure I'm adopted.

My mom has a PC with windows 98 SE a 500mhz celeron 64 megs of ram of which 8 are dedicated to video memory, so actually 56 megs or ram and the thing can barley run IE.

She has no clue how to download a file, it's out of her comprehention i guess...

But at least she is not as bad as my boss!!!

Parents...

It took me about 7 or 8 years just to get my parents trained to not push the power button to turn the computer off whenever its on w/o shutting down first (which, ironically, due to ATX form factor + software integration, is okay to do now)...

My dad still refers to it as a "typewriter". He is better now, but he used to just sit down, at the desktop, and start typing... and then be **** when his words weren't showing up. He knows the very basics now though because his work started using PC's and he had to be trained for his job.

My mom is a little better though, as she can be at least self sufficient enough to use what's already installed w/o much problems. She even knows not to open an email that has even a remote possibility of being a virus. And she even managed to get her scanner/printer combo thing to actually scan and print.

My dad set up a wireless network at home so that my mum could use the ADSL the way SHE wanted to use it: Sitting in the sofa in the livingroom, drinking tea or coffe, having a smoke, and using her iBook too google, read and write in forums, and check on her kids by talking to them on MSN

They are both quite cool and competent enough to know how to use a computer and use it well. They doesn't play NS though ...

It's a shame, because if I told anyone about that on NTFM, they'd never believe me.

Now, if you want to see pics of me (I tried the thing here on the site, and couldn't get it to work), go to the tech help section, and click on the link in my post, and you will see who I am.
So nice to meet all you people, and hope to toss dialogue back and forth in the future.
Reason, I've showed up today, is cuz I want to play NS, and can't get it to work, so stumbled onto this site.
EVERYONE has been so nice trying to help, and sooner or later I'll get it together.
Have a great day!

My both parents use computer daily in their work. My dad knows quite a bit about computers, when my mother only uses those programs she really needs.

Neither of them plays any computer games apart from those Windows games (pinball, minesweeper etc.). Only a moment ago when I was playing NS, my dad said to me: "You never get bored to that one, do you?"
