an idea to make it more fun for them
It's no fun when you join a game over halfway over. Is there anything that can be done to make it not so bad? I'm thinking when you join a game that's over a certain amount of minituse already the joiner gets 2 points below the average of the team. That way he isn't totally caught up, but not as bad off.

No, the best way to help late joiners is to shorten the games to under 10 minutes like they're supposed to be.

well, i just played a game where i late-joined, and it is not REALLY a problem...

just stay back and leech xp from your mates until you are ready to fight, just be calm

but still i think zek's pint is the best

or late joiners can just SUFFEr

although, i went to show my mate the game for the first time, he entered the game in the middle of a spawn camping situation

The only real times I see that late joining is a problem is, like said, when you're in a spawn camping situation, or when you're a LA Marine getting hit with Xenocide constantly/Skulk getting hit with Grenades contantly. Being a lower lifeform amongst heavy fire as such can make it difficult to pal around even with Onoses(the easiest way I've seen to grab exp is to wait around an Onos as he devours people ).

Perhaps if late joiners were given a type of experience bonus based on time elapsed(if 1 lvl 6 alien gives 110 experience on dying, someone who joined 5 minutes after the match started would gain approximately 50 extra experience, regardless of how the original 110 experience was distributed). I think a bonus as such would give people the insentive to leave base with a group of friends and make it easier for them to catch up. Of course, these figures are incredibly rough since I just thought of the idea. Also, the time-based experience bonus would have to be turned off after a certain time so as to not create a dependency for leveling. Maybe I'll think of an actual formula later.

just stick with your mates that already leveled up, you should be alright

    WIN!

Although, you could take the average team level and give it to the late-joiner(rounded off to digits) instead. Helps with late-joining

Just to be sure, because I am a major sux0r in maths, average team level = sum of all player levels/no. of players in team.

    Am I right?

Doing that would just allow players who suck to rejoin the game 5 minutes in and get a higher level for free.

Then say half of the average - enough to afford a handful of upgrades so the player can pretend to be useful, but not enough that they wouldn't have leeched as much by sucking from the start of the game. It really isn't much fun to join a game that's already going, and it certainly doesn't seem likely that the underlying problems are going to be fixed any time soon.

On a side note, I'm sick of all these BS "I took down a battleship with a lerk" examples that are meant to show something about balance. If you killed three HAs as a starting skulk, either they were terrible/blind/terribly blind or you caught each one with six HP, possibly in a group of several other aliens.
