It's my pleasure to announce something I've been working on for a long time; Unknown Worlds Entertainment. This is the game company I am starting which will both continue supporting NS, and also will work on bigger and better NS-like projects. We are looking into lots of exciting projects, including releasing NS as a retail standalone product, and also a full-fledged sequel on a new engine. We are currently looking at next-generation engines, talking to publishers, and forming our core team.
We are very interested in talented and passionate people to help create special and memorable games. We are especially in need of animators and concept, 2D or 3D artists, and possibly a lead artist. If you want to work on innovative games that push action, strategy and socialization, and have the raw talent or experience to create amazing visuals, please visit the the site and apply. We're eager to get started.
If you like NS, you're going to looove what's coming next...

hope that helps
I used to be a fairly loyal CS fan. I swear up and down that the biggest problem that ever happened to CS was that it was put on the shelves of BESTBUY. Why you may ask? Here goes.
1) Now that CS is on retail shelves it is easily accessible to the non-internet saavy people. I know that in a small way this benefits a great deal of people who could otherwise never understand how to download and install the mod. However, the large majority of people that influxed due to this decision were largely in the age group that generally degrades the quality of the gameplay for others (understand that the statement is a generalization and does not apply to ALL those whose balls have yet to drop). Bottom line, I don't trust most parents to actually pay attention to ESRB ratings that should bar this agegroup as is.
2) The hightened popularity of the mod brought about an unprecedented effort to try and provide cheaters more sophisticated cheats than ever seen before. To add to this, a large majority of the detected cheaters were also members of the same age group mentioned earlier. (I actually did a study of this phenomenon for independent study before graduating, but the work was never published and I don't have sufficient rights to release it myself).
If you put the two together (you can add right?) you'll notice that the net effect of putting CS on store shelves had the ubiquitous result of increasing the number of cheaters faster than the growth of the normal players. It is estimated that in CS infancy the number of cheaters was about 2% of its player population. Since the retail release, it is speculated the the number of cheaters has grown to as much as 9% of its population (7% among the more conservative estimations). To its credit, there have been plenty of measures implemented to try and reduce this number and to some degree have been successful. Regardless, while not provable, putting the game on store shelves can only detriment the game (in the case that it is already free in some other fashion and already reasonably popular to argue that going retail would increase population numbers significantly).
This is not to say that I never wish for some iteration of Natural-Selection to go retail, but I would rather see it as an independent, full-blown game project instead of a mod project. Aside from any arguments i've noted above, it just seems somewhat wrong to put a mod on shelves, but that's just my sense of indie development at work.
I'm afraid its too late. CS gone NS players, are alreadying bring all their nifty 'tools' with them.... its only a matter of time.
The end is near...
Too many patches to "noobify" the game..guns became more accurate...killing became to easy..
1. It will add many more people to the community. I know many of you don't want a large influx of players due to the "noobs" and possibly the cheaters, but I believe we need to drop the elitist attitude and stop underestimating the human race. We have an excellent Natural Selection community, why not make that community larger? More people playing means more people who will eventually become affluent at the game and contribute to our intellectual gaming community. I know that I am perfectly willing to help out new players in-game in hopes that they will eventually grow to provide competition.
2. It will give Natural Selection vastly higher publicity. Natural Selection is the best game I have ever played and it deserves to be recognized by the entire computer gaming community. Think of it as Natural Selection speading it's glory.
3. It will mean more money for the creators and developers. The advantages to this are two fold. For one, it will repay people like Flayra for making such a killer game. I can't imagine how much time the founders of the game put into conceptualizing and creating the game. Obviously they deserve to benefit from making something that enhanced the gaming experience of thousands of people. Secondly, money from retail NS means more money that can go to Flayra's new company in order to hire talented artists and engineers to further develope Natural Selection. If the company is making money than it will have increased capacity to work on things like the much anticipated NS sequal that gamers like us can enjoy. As you can see, the money generated from retail NS will benefit everybody.
We of all people (the people enjoying the game every day) should be the greatest supporters of the game going retail.
Q
Aside from that, our "mod going retail" history lessons only tell us that it increases the likelihood that you'll be confronted with cheaters, exploiters, poor sports, and those otherwise bent on making everyone else game experience more miserable having played with them. Far be it from me to make assumptions about the rest of you guys, but I thought we would want to minimize that part of the community if not wipe it out all together.
Reiterating what I said above, going retail will only add detriment to the game (from the standpoint of the community as a whole). I'm all about giving money to the developers for their hard-earned work, but then I thought that was what the Constie program was all about.
I digress.
Great mod, but certainly not ready for primetime.
I must admit though a lot of the whiners and immature players probably came from the fact CS went retail, but they don't bug me as much as a cheat.
me23 : If NS goes retail, it doesn't mean you have to buy the game to play NS, it is merely a method for those that never bought HL to be able to buy a HL cd key to play NS in a bundled pack.
Its hard to find an original HL on shelves these days.
Personally I think good luck and well derserved to Flay and Co if they get some return for the time and effort invested.
I have friends at my school that aren't too fluent in finding the website, downloading, and then installing a half-life mod. I have many friends that have wanted to play this at their house cause they will play on my comp, but they are calling me up going "Where do I get the install file from again?". So this would make it easier for ppl to get it, BUT it WILL Bring in Many n00bs into the community... I Guess we will have to just cope with it and teach them the ways of the greats...
No I didn't actually. It doesn't matter
Whatever happens, if the game passes retail, I'm buying it since I can't figure out a way to convince my parents to donate some of my money through constell.
What.... you think everyone that plays our beloved games is as tech/web saavy as you? My dad plays the game and enjoys it very much, but he wouldn't be able to install it if I put all the setup files in a nice little folder on his desktop for him. The same goes for one of my friends. She loves NS, but couldn't install anything on her computer (too afraid of breaking the machine i think) if her life depended on it.
Don't assume that what you consider to be a most easy task actually is a universally easy task. It rarely is. I think finding the surface area of arbitrarily curved objects on a given mathematical curve in 3-D space is most easy, but it would likely give the average joe a severe aneurism... that is to say, if he actually had any inkling to TRY figuring it out. Most people just leave alone what they don't know and find someone else to do it, or not do it at all. Its something on the lines of society based knowledge/service outsourcing.
In the future, please refrain from thinking that everyone has the same domain and depth of knowledge as you.
Cheers.
While I have a lot of respect for Flayra, I'm not fully convinced that he is willing to make the hard choices necessary to balance the game, including removal of undesirable elements like near 'invulerablility' with medpack spam that allows a person to take obscene amounts of damage without dying. Let's be honest here, he just likes the marines too much. (and he has admitted that ) I'm not critical of him, but I think we have to be honest in that for a game to be successful on a retail level you have to look BEYOND your likes and dislikes to what is best for the game as a whole.
There are too many concepts holding back NS that Flayra is unwilling (or unable) to change at this point in time. When he's ready to start making those changes, you will see a fantastic game hit the shelves. Until then NS will remain as it is...
Regards,
Savant

Heh.
Possibly you need to check the state of the software industry as a whole, at the moment. Name 3 games which came out NOT in that state at release.
CS and DoD has gone and both are pure **** now. Before DoD was good but after that i totally stopped playing it.

CoD, DeusEX:Invisible War, and Max Payne 2:The fall of Max payne.

Why in the world did you pop into the thread to answer a rhetorical question directed at someone else? I know that's off topic, but it just seemed so odd that I couldn't help but comment on it.
And yes, NS has a loooong way to go before being retail quality. Even though if released right now it would still be higher quality than a lot of currently available retail games. That's more an indication of the poor state of the software industry than anything else.

I somehow doubt Flayra will let those Valve nubs screw around with the game mechanics of NS like the DOD and CS developers did.

CoD - Single Player was fine, MP practically SCREAMED 'Not finished' with multiple server-side bugs, no anti-cheat, one game mode which CRASHED THE SERVER, and instructions that said 'Please refer to OTHER Q3 games for info'.
Yes, not finished.
Deus Ex : IW - Dunno, not played.
Max Payne II : Once again, bugged, patched. Also missing many features originally intended for release.
Yes, I believe I was saying
NS the stand-alone game with a next-generation engine might.
Why? HL is too limited, and too constrictive in it's engine to allow for any more flexability. NS maps have to be made and re-made in it's entity counts to try to make a appealing game visually and through the internet connections of many.
NS the stand-alone next-gen engine game probably will go commercial, simply because it'd be polished, and have enough manouverability in it's design to let the dev team working on it do what they need and want to do with it.
NS of now? No.
NS of the future? Probably so.

I have to agree here. My sister's fiance wanted the latest version of NS, and asked me if I could tell him where to get the file...
"Well, the latest version is Beta 3, so you'll need to get the BETA installer from natural-selection.com download page. Oh, and you'll need the 2 beta patches too. And it's not for HL anymore, it's for STEAM. YOu don't need to know what STEAM is. You get that from another site. Then you install STEAM, then the beta, then the first and second patches, and you're done! Easy!"
...Yeah. I dread to think what would've happened if he was an actual computer nub.

Its not going to go retail like cs or dod.
Its going to be a whole new game with its own engine.
