Extracurricular Activities Moving Outside School?

<div class="IPBDescription">ATTENTION TEXAS!!!!!!</div> On Thursday, February 19, 2004, an article in the Austin American Statesman was written about Texas' proposed education system. They managed to slip in at the end the following sentence that people would overlook, not wanting to finish the article or something.

<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Finally, the committee will consider moving all extracurricular activities such as band, choir, or sports outside of the regular school day so the focus would be on academics.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

This is an outrage. Fine arts and athletics are a vital part of education. Yea, it says outside, so they would still be there. However, shouldn't this learning be part of school?

It is said that life skills such as teamwork and communication is learned in sports. Why take away something from school that <b>benefits</b> children? Apparently, the Texas Legislature has no idea what they are doing with this change.

What about the Fine Arts? How can you take away something like band or choir? After all, wasn't it Westfield High School the band that won Bands of America (BOA) this year? Do they really want dull students to be in school? There goes individiality. And what about tests? Studies have shown that these classes actually increase the average SAT score more that the average, non-musical students. And they want to change it so students can be more acedemic?

It has also been said that these activities create a smaller drop-out rate. It gives the students incentive to stay in school and work hard. If this happens, the drop-out rate will sky rocket. And the Texas government wants to give incentives to schools graduating more students. Good luck, Texas.

If you are strongly against this, contact your Texas Senators and Representatives. Take action now, before it is too late.

Please post this in other forums you post in. This must be let known.

    First of all, I think you're misinterpreting what they mean, it seems like they are saying to move extracurricular classes to afterschool rather then having integrated classes into a normal schedule. In such a case, one would be doing all academics during the normal day, and afterschool would be choir/band/sports. At least that's my interpretation.

    Second, the chances of any local government taking such a bold move is rather unlikely if it is indeed how you defined it. To my knowledge, it's more bureaucratic then executive, meaning, it would have more to do with a school district or superintendents rather than city councils or state legislators.

    While I'm certainly in favor of keeping art in the schools, I can't really say I object to keeping sports after school hours. At my high school the football team alone got more funding than the math dept., computer science dept., and English dept. combined. And we were still the absolute worst team in our division...

    You're from Cinco High as well? Wonders never cease.... <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    It's the Texas High School I attended, and the football team got roughly 3-4 times the funding our arts/music/theater/etc. departments got. And they <i>still</i> got beaten in almost every game they played in. (In comparison, our hockey team was better. That's right. The hockey team. From Texas. Was. Better. Than. The. Football. Team.) Sad, huh?

    Gee, seems to be the opposite around here.

    We get new computers in the labs around every 2-3 years and upgraded every single computer in the school to XP earlier this year. That and all new high school students are getting laptops to take home with wireless cards to type stuff and research and blah blah.

    Not that our sports departments are underfunded, but we seem to be a tech savvy school in comparison to the way most people describe their local high schools. Then again we have a big budget because of all the rich peoples that live around here...

    WTH? It was a big deal if our students got PENCILS...

    Oklahoma education system is so horrible because the population is mostly dangerously stupid. just stupid enough to vote NO on the things they should vote yes on if they were smart (like, giving schools money so we don't have teachers going on strike because they make less than minimum wage).

    Ignorant fools can't see that our economy is headed to the toilet...
