the "shadows" were a bit of a hack (you can still enable them in GLQuake if you want to see them in action, same console command) basically, what you're looking at isn't a "shadow" , it's just the same 3d model projected as a model with all the points having the same z-coordinate sticking to the floor, so it extends over ridges into thin air and only works with flat horizontal surfaces <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo--> oh yeah, and it causes horrendous renderering errors. probably a Z-buffer thing.
