Msmgs Keeps Loading...

My msmsgs process keeps loading even though I disabled it a while ago. It also keeps opening ports and making them accessable to out intruders. How do I stop it?

sounds like msn messenger?? if it is, go into the options and turn of on windows start, but other than that, the post above should do it, (msconfig).

what EZero said, and rename C:\Program Files\Messenger to C:\Program Files\MessengerOFF to prevent it from being able to load msn messenger without your consent (cuz it cant find it)

I just completely uninstalled it, so there's no chance it will ever start up again.

uninstall it from your system and then re-install the newest one - then in that one go to options and find the tab where you have the choice to disable it from running on startup

I've also tried the msconfig thing, but msmgs isn't listed, but there are two blank ones in there that have a registry location, is this a suspect?

Start>Run Copy paste C:/windows/inf/SYSOC.INF Look for msgsmsgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7. Delete hide, Add and remove programs> Windows components and it should be in the list .

Ps. DO NOT DELETE THE COMMAS IT MUST LOOK LIKE THIS: msgsmsgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,,7

You have to uninstall it through add/remove programs...
• PalinPalin Join Date: 2003-03-24 Member: 14848Members
OK, just to get things straight... are we talking about our favorite (not) chat program or the network messaging service. The service cannot be uninstalled, only disabled. To do this:

Start > My Computer (right clik) > Manage > Services > Messenger > Disabled

That should prevent that process from starting the next time around.

Should it be the chat program, you'll have to either deactivate it through 'msconfig' or manually delete the appropriate registry entries (or both if you want to be absolutely sure).

Either way, why the heck is this post on this forum and not some tech support forum for microsoft operating systems?

What are the appropriate registry entries for it?

run a search for msmsg (msmsgs?) and where it shows up under a startup or run directory along with other programs you will want to delete it. Turning it off in the service manager should take care of it though (not 100% sure).

I guess it doesnt. I've done it! I deleted all the files using FileFinder and it's not loading anymore.

You don't want to disable the Messenger service; it's not msmsgs.exe, it's a thread-sync timer. Can cause instability.

Just Start>Run>regedit.exe and do a search for 'msmsgs.exe' with all three checkboxes checked. Keep hitting 'find next' until you get to one in a folder named 'Run'. Delete the entry entire (NOT the folder, and NOT just the value of the key.. the key itself) close regedit, reboot.
Boom, no more irritating MSN Messenger, which is what that *is*. Just an early version that MS stuck everyone with.

As well, *Phased* to Off-Topic, where this should have been a LONG time ago.

Messenger is usually the first thing i ever turn off upon installing XP on any machine. It is the source of all those pop-up ads that you get as well as a very exploitable service that has upwards of 200 known hacks to give a shell to a remote user. I have never had instability for turning it off, nor have I heard of anyone else having instability for doing this. It is a feature largely intended to allow network-wide messaging for large networked organizations and can safely be disabled if your network admins do not utilize this feature.
