Modem Problem

Can you fix it ?
I've upgraded a PC. I started with a better base unit. I transferred some of the kit from the old unit into the new one where there were gaps. Including this 56k modem. And guess what doesn't work ? Right.

The old machine was running win98. The new machine is running win2k vanilla. The modem worked in the old machine but doesn't in the new one. When I try to dial out, it complains there is no dial tone. When I select 'don't wait for dial tone', it dials out, but doesn't handshake. It seems it can speak but can't hear.

I'm not sure what the modem is exactly except that Win2k reports it as a Conexant HCF. The modem is marked as a Diamond Multimedia. There is no model number save what's on the chipset.

Now I know for a fact there is life at the end of the phone line because I can hear it through the phone. I've tried two lines as well. And I'm using short cables. And I've tried two cables.

I've tried just about every driver I can get my hands on. The win2k driver used when auto-detecting the modem. The Conexant generic driver. The driver that I matched down to the very chipset. All drivers exhibit the same problem.

So I'm assuming that:

- it's not the modem. It worked in the old machine.
- it's not the driver. I've tried many.
- it's not the cables, phone line.

Therefore, the potential problems could be:

- win2k just doesn't like the modem. Unlikely I feel.
- there is some conflict/COM port screw up in win2k that I need to sort out.
- the modem has been assigned some IRQ it doesn't like by the BIOS. Perhaps I need to reserve an IRQ for the PCI slot in the BIOS ? Can anyone expand on this please ?

Please no wisecracks about getting broadband. La-la-la - I'm not listening.

If anyone has any thoughts, I'm all ears. Unlike the modem.

How about just getting another modem and trying with that one? You don't have to actually buy one (although the 56k ones are insanely cheap)...

Could do. However, I'd like to solve this one first.

Hit it with your fist and if that doesnt work try kicking it a bit.

If it's big and mechanical that's how I usually get it working again. I wouldn't recommend doing that to a sensitive electronic device though
