Natural selection - already exists?

I was just browsing TopWebGames and what name should stand out from the crowd, but Natural Selection. So I load the page expecting to find some info about this mod, but no. It's a totally different game, an RPG it seems. Anyway if anyone is interested here is the link: Natural Selection

They may not be able to use the Natural Selection name I'm sure MonsE or Flayra have trademarked it

Flay has copyrighted "Natural Selection" in a video game context - evidenced by the fact that the expansion for AvP2 was renamed from Natural Selection to Primal Hunt or something like that.

The site *says* "© Natural Selection 2000"... but if that were the case, Flayra oughtn't to have been able to get the copyright in the first place. So I'm confused. I believe Flayra's in the right of it here... what he'll do, who knows. It's just a little MUD.

Flayra at least has the name trademarked, and liek coil said, it forced the new AvP thing to change their name, so obviously he has rights to it.

after following NS for a while now, it feels so strange to see the title in this context, especially that logo in the upper left.

I read about it for a few minutes and im confused, is it a computer game? Or is it like dungeons and dragons?

I wouldn't worry about it - both they and Flay are in the business of handing out free software, and the apparent dissimilarity is so great that neither could make much case for infringement.

A MUD is a multi-user dungeon. In the days of 2400-baud connections to Wildcat BBS's, they were a way to play a D&D-like text adventure online. They are mostly curiosities now, but some still linger on...

there's always Major-MUD fairly well known. Wouldn't call it D&D like any more than most RPG's out there.

How much does it cost to copyright a name for a video game?
And how long does it take to get the approval?
