Quick Q For You Hardware Geeks
I purchased a GeForce FX5200 a few weeks ago. I was expecting perfectly smooth 100fps, but of course, it didn't work out due to my setup:
1.2ghz Intel Celeron
256MB SDRAM
Now, my mom has a
1.47ghz AMD Athlon (1600+)
350~ SDRAM
I asked my mom (my bad, FORCED) my mom to switch computers with me, but I don't have time to make the switch until saturday. When I asked why I wasn't getting 100fps before, a lot of people cited my celeron processor as the problem. So the question is, is the 1.47ghz with the ram upgrade any better? Don't tell me to upgrade to DDR ram because I can't... Obviously, my mom's not too happy about having to switch computers, especially since I practically lectured her on why me getting the better computer is more important, so for the sake of family relations, tell me if the upgrade is worth it!

i have a 600 mhz computer, have had it for the past 3+ years, do all my stuff on it.
i could have leeched so much money from my parents, but i dont... i just dont like stealing from them... even though they're practically throwing money at me
i think for the sake of family relations you should stop the trade, and apologise to your mum.
make sure you have all the proper drivers, sell/get rid of the celeron, get some money [130 australian?] and get a 1.8 athlon
gg Valve.
I get perfectly smooth gameplay in C&C Generals for comparison reasons.
I tried an FX5200. Choppy Choppy Choppy. GG Nvidia. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Then again, I'm not too happy with Steam at the moment. The idea is sound, but the execution, especially the near-ghostly Friends service, leaves much to be desired.
