Need Help With Ping

hi i was wondering if anyone could help me. I havent been using steam too often cause when i play cs 1.6 or ns beta i lag like hell usually around 200-500 ping. I dont know why either cause when I play cs 1.5 i get like 20 ping and no lag what so ever. can anyone give me tips or somewhere to go to find out what to do to help me get steam running faster. thanks

200 - 500 ouch! I doubt these will greatly help but:
in console or config.cfg set:

rate "12000"
cl_updaterate "50"
cl_cmdrate "50"
cl_download_ingame "0"
cl_timeout "300"

thats all I can think of for now...
