It's not illegal to advertise (spyware is though, since they're collecting data from your computer without your knowledge). As for adware, the only thing that's probably not so legal is that they install it on your computer without your knowledge (again... *sigh*).

Adware is perfectly legal, as it is typically included with shareware and you are informed of it being installed.

Spyware is illegal, but spyware producing companies use dodgy ToSs to circumvent that.

    Don't like spyware?

That's why I worship **this** bad boy.

I use Ad-Aware in combination with Spybot Search & Destroy, Ad Muncher and generally good security techniques (Restricting ActiveX, blocking third-party cookies, disabling Install on Demand, etc...) to keep a spyware, adware and virus free system. If you get Spybot, make sure that you run the extra tools included, like the immunizer and HOSTS file addition, after cleaning your system!

Spyware is legal as long as they outline it in the TOS. You know, that thing that nobody ever reads and skips over?

Ad Muncher isn't spyware removal. It blocks ads, popups, harmful scripts, etc...
