1) Take model
2) Stick some sort of surface (e.g, table) behind it
3) Choose good camera postion
4) Arrange lights so it looks good
5) Render
I use Deep Exploration if your intrested
EDIT - Yes DE is only for rendering AFAIK.
I don't have 3dsMax so i don't know how to use the inbuilt renderer but i'm sure someone here will tell you.
Tip : Just mess around <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' /><!--endemo-->
(this is in 3ds max btw, i think gmax will work 2).
1. Take a skylight and position it over your model. (cone side-up)
2. Press 8 and turn make it a white backround
3. press 9 and choose light tracer
4. Rnder away!
BTW i may have confused 8 with 9 and 9 with 8, so try if i got it wrong, sry
here is what i got while fooling around with rendering styles
