Help With Extrusion And Vertices

<div class="IPBDescription">ms3d help</div> so im using russian factions spas 12 tut and it says to make the sight, make a box and check the "by vertex" box under the selection tool. then to select the top vertices of the square. well whenever i try to..it just selects the whole box and i cant extrude. i need to extrude to make the sight and i dont know how to select the top vertices...any help?

box... (click and drag... in any view)
Select.. Vetexted...

click and draw in either the front, or side view-ports... selecting in the top/bottom viewport would select all 8 vertexes... but in the front/right, your selecting only 4...
