<div class="IPBDescription">two great demos</div><a href='http://www.fileshack.com/file.x?fid=4593' target='_blank'>Get the Gangland Demo here</a>
<a href='http://www.fileshack.com/file.x?fid=4576' target='_blank'>Get Painkiller Demo here</a>
Both games are really neat.
Gangland is an overhead view almost hack&slash rpg style (except you have guns) mob game. very stylish, very cool. I likey. It also made me want to play Vice City all over again. heh.
Also cool is Painkiller. One charm of Painkiller is its demonic theme. Its quite easily the best game that had zombies in it since Quake 1. And not since DOOM has there been any game where you're the hero fighting demons from hell. Also, this game has the most original FPS weapons I've seen in a long time.
The melee weapon is a uh.. stick thing.. with blades on it that spins really fast, perfect for chopping up zombies. Alternate fire for it however is the cool part, as it shoots out this.. ball thing.. that when you point the stick at it a holy beam of light appears between the two points, which makes quick work of any enemies that are touched by the light. The trick is you have to move around while keeping your stick aimed at whereever the ball is stuck to otherwise the beam doesn't appear.
Also there's a really, really cool Stake gun. It makes full use of the games physics (same havok physics you see in any game these days) by physically shooting stakes at things. You can shoot a stake and like pin zombies to the wall and stuff. Very neat.
I recommend both of these to everyone to at least try. Dunno if I'd buy either of them, but they're definately worth the download for the demo.

Unfortunately, my 56k is poopy and I'll just have to wait until the next PCGamer disc <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->
While painkiller has a neat concept, I can't really tell yet if it will have the things that are important to me in an fps game (solid multiplayer, for one). I'll just wait and see.
Gangland, on the other hand, has me excited. I can't wait for the release (soon, it's gone gold).

hehe.
Good thing that People Can Fly actually teamed up with the penny arcade guys. Its just what PK needs to get the publicity it needs and what better way than that?
On the other hand, is Gangland really good?
Seconded. How do you beat that big Cyclops guy?

Thx. Does anyone else get that screeching sound problem after going crazy pyscho?
Points to Painkiller for having the biggest <a href='http://koti.mbnet.fi/vaaryys/boss.jpg' target='_blank'>boss</a> I've ever seen (although that piktar does him no honor whatsoever).
Now the Serious Sam boss......

Thats the most fandabulous swear filter dodge I may ever seen in my entire life! (blatant hypocryte speaking as I was picked up for doing it last week) I predict this image will be owned by a mod in the next 5 mins!

Wrong. Hit his hammer with everything you have, and then when it breaks just hit any part of his body to hurt him.
Oh, and Doom? Resident Evil has, and always will have, the best zombies ever <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Meh. I've only played Second Encounter, and even that was ages ago.

Indeed. That guy was friggin huge...
I can't wait till they make Serious Sam 2
(Before the nubs start, The 2nd Encounter is not Sam2 even though it is the second game. The maker of the game is currently making a game titled "Serious Sam 2")
Resident Evil is a cheap hack of crap that was a complete rip off of an already well established game, Alone In The Dark. While the rest of the AITD series sucks, 1 is a classic. And RE totally ripped them off. AITD spawned the survival horror genre, not those no talent hacks.
(Can you tell I really don't like RE? heh.)

AITD was a great game for its time, but it falls far short of the superlative Resident Evil series.
I fail to see how Capcom are "no talent hacks", because to me the RE series has always been a visual and aural treat, with enjoyable gameplay that places you in the centre of a funky B-movie plot.
Even if Capcom "ripped off" AITD, which I don't believe they did, they evolved it into a much better game.
AITD was an adventure, RE was the birth of Survival Horror.
:P
Bored of it halfway into the first level. <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Initially, aim for the hammer. Once it dissapears, just shoot him.
Anyways.. as for Gangland.
Just played through the second set of missions for Gangland. Haven't even tried the challenge. Overall it stands up to its "Action Sim/RTS/RPG" description... Which is weird.
The controls keep a bit of getting used to. I'm somewhat disappointed with the inability to move using the keyboard, but over all its not to big. The vechicles are a bit annoying, but then again there is only one in the demo, and what game ever included the best vechicles or anything in their demo. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
The car they did include, though, is hardly fun to use. Yeah, being able to get around quickly is good, but steering the thing is horrible and for the most part its slower than walking until you get used to it.. and even then its kinda awkward. The restictions in imposes (You are unable to drive off the road) aren't too fun..
The missions aren't too hard. I found that for the most part there isn't too much that can't be solved by the main characters secondary attack (throwing a bundle of TNT at people).
The lackeys are a bit varied, but there is still those ones that stick out above the rest.
The basic breakdown goes as such
Bouncers/Brutes. These big guys serve two purposes. Bullet Sponge and Stunning opponents. Their weapon can be upgraded from fists to wooden baseball bat to spiked Steel base ballbat
Bodyguards. These characters weild two pistols and can be assigned to guard others.
Their weapons can be upgraded from Dual Revolvers to Dual scoped Revolvers to Dual Semiautos
Gunners. These guys Run around with tommy guns. No upgrades in demo. Meh.
StreetGirls. The fastest of the lackeys, they aren't to useful. They can't take too many hits and their weapons can be upgraded from tazer to acid spray. Not too much damage on either weapon, but they stun enemies quite well
Big Mamma. You only get this lackey in the first set on conquests. Is a "Super Unit" Carries a shotgun and can heal other units. Slow as hell.
Overall I find the Gunners and body guards the best, with brutes coming in a close third. All you really need for backup in the demo is covering fire (Gunners) or a good distraction (Brutes) so yu can throw some TNT at the guy.
In general the game feels a bit like a cross between the older GTAs, Mafia and an RPG.. Since the sim/buisness part of the game I assume comes later, and isn't really in the demo.
Gangland isn't something to run out and buy right away, but is still fairly decent.
Quite frankly, I thought that Gangland was beyond terrible. The game obviously looks stylish. The city feels almost real, with people walking about, shopping, and living out their everyday lives.
But sadly, the gameplay is forgettable. Shootouts are dull, and it's hardly exciting to see your character waste an entire clip into a single enemy, only to see him survive. Likewise, every character beyond the first that the player gets to control looks just about the same.
It's sad because I was expecting loads from it as well.
Painkiller is a bit better. The graphics are great, and the physics are beyond awesome. Hell, the weapons are probably the best I've seen in years. That's not to say that the demo doesn't have problems, though. The First level is unacceptably slow, and I don't recall actually being hit on it. The second level is much better, and instantly made me think of a favorite game of mine, Serious Sam.
And the third level is just sweet. You'll have to see it for yourself.
Will I buy it though? Probably not. One of the reasons I liked Serious Sam so much, was because of the cooperative gameplay. It simply adds another dimension to the game.
