You need to open the materials menu (shortcut = M) and create a new material using the appropriate texture. If I had max open I'd talk you through it; can't remember the exact steps off-hand, but it's not hard. I recommend checking out the excellent tutorials that come with max, though; they'll explain how to get a bitmap material in order.

open up the matierials editor (shortcut = m).

    select a blank material.

now under "binn basic parameters" there should be 3 colored blocks (white and greys)

    Ambient: (colored box)
Diffuse: (colored box) (little grey square)
Specular: (colored box) (little grey square)

clicl on the little grey square that follows the Diffuse colored box.

out of the new list that should pop-up, choose bitmap.

select the texture you wish to apply, and hit ok

now directally under the materials selctor (the little spheres) there will be two buttons you want to hit.

one is a sphere with an arrow to a cube... this says "apply marterial to selection"

and then there is a cube, with blue/white colors... hit that one too. this should be "show map in viewport"

make sure your viewport is "smooth + hilights" (right click on the viewport name)

hmm...no wonder I've heard that the 3dsmax materials editor is the most counter-intuitive thing ever...

It's just amazingly versatile. For instance, this was made entirely in 3dsmax, using a special material:

then again it could also be done in any major 3d package. just need someone to write the shader.

scene's not exactly the same, of course but it's close enough for a quick demo I'd say...
