Erm... My first game system was an Apple Plus. After that I was hooked to my NES and SNES (what is this Sega you speak of?)
And after that, nothing looked appealing except for 2-3 games that I could always play at a friends' house. So I haven't bought a console since. I also don't buy many PC games, either, but there are usually twice as many cool new PC games as there are Console games (no exceptions since 1994?)

Well, I have to go pack so I can hit the road today for FL.
My roots are in console gaming, so it'll always have a soft spot in my geeky heart. I like how, for the most part, console games are always so much more thoroughly tested. Maybe it's cause there hasn't been a way to patch til now, but console games seemed so bugless. PC games on the other hand can go through three, four, five patches and still be messed up. Heck, look at Blizzard. Years after a game comes out and it still gets balance updates. Also, platformer games just seem right on a console, and out of place on PC. Dunno why.
One thing that PC games own consoles in is flight sims. *hugs IL2: Forgotten Battles*. I can't wait to fly me a P-38 Lightning.

maybe bacon, but how often do you pull that off when the person you're trying to do it to has a sniper rifle aimed at you? ^~
I wouldn't say console games are bugless... but it's true that they're generally more stable. I feel like console games get a lot more testing love than PC titles, but in many ways that's probably due to the expense. It's much cheaper to develop for a PC than a console =o
and commy, like I said. Consoles are specialists. When it comes to running games they can quite happily run something that would take a PC 3-5 times the spec (if you wanna test this theory out, find a game that's on a playstation and PC and check the tech specs for a PSX compared to the kind of PC you need to run the titles at anywhere near the same rate)
PCs are far more flexible though, outside of gaming. It's lots easier to justify having a PC than console; PCs can be used for work, typing, data, downloads, etc. It's only recently that consoles have tried to nip into the multi-use category by allowing DVD films to be watched on them (except for Ninty who refuse to be anything other than a games machine).
If you have the right games you can have social get togethers with a PC too though, worms/scorched earth used to keep me and 7 other friends clustered around a keyboard plus with some gamepads hooked up we've enjoyed stuff like the Aliens vs Predator arcades, Dungeons and Dragons side-scrolling beatemup (4 players! waii!) and stuff. Course... Consoles really do rock in that area but PCs can manage it too if you go out of your way to allow it =3
I feel sorry and glad for those who never got to enjoy PSO online with the DC. It shattered my gaming for years to come and while other games such as diablo might have a similiar layout, nothing plays like PSO. Absolutely nothing; especially the boss fights XD

I've got a double standard about platforms and bugs in the programs; Console games need to be bugless, PC programs should be bugless. A small difference, but it is there.
Consoles bug me for the sole reason that PC games are dumbed down due to the cross-port. I'm thinking Deus Ex 2 here. I'm confident that had it not been for the cross-port to various console platforms, DX2 would have stayed closer to the original PC game. However, to cater for the console crowd, it was dumbed down.
The other cross-platform game I've played was Kotor. It was kinda fun. But it didn't pull me in like DX, SS2, HL, Torment etc...
Needless to say, I've never owned a console. Never interested me.

uh... no offence but I just can't agree with that varsity. And for both of you I point out again that cross-platform games don't work in either direction. Regarding 'depth' I beg to differ. I look at the PC shelves and I see serious sam, quake, doom, half-life, call of duty and a host of other FPS shooters where the aim is generally to kill your way through levels. Sure you'll do other stuff but lets face it; how much of a ratio of mindless shooting to puzzles is there? There's 'depth' on either platform if you're willing to look. As for innovation and depth on the PC, I quite agree. There's nothing around at the moment which is screaming: buy me now ! I'm different ! I'm proud ! I'm replayable after 2 minutes !
what a silly thread IMO. there shouldn't even be a distinction. consoles are just little computers with games as their only applications. there are good games and bad games for all platforms. I repeat what I said early in the thread: we must not fight amongst ourselves, we must unite against common enemies... like Macs, aka paperweights...

I tend to enjoy consoles more, but then again I'm not into about 98% of what I see advertised for PCs. I don't really like FPS games, or RTS games, or really even RPGs. I enjoy games like Pikmin (While an RTS game, it's different from any I've played on the PC), the Harvest Moon series, unique games that don't involve aiming or tons of action. Personally, I stopped playing NS in september and started playing Animal Crossing. average gamers collection huh? based on what? =P conjecture or assumption is nice but it's not a good basis for proving a point. I'm not being mean, or at least I'm not trying to be but if you're gonna argue this particular point it'd be a good idea to bring solid evidence to the table. Charts we can talk about, but 'average gamers' and their collections is kinda just subjective unless you start throwing statistics about ^^;
I just love to sit back and watch people politely flame each other over issues like this. For me, it's about the game I play, not the system I play it on. And that's the way it'll always be for me.

I am not limting my observations on the relative complexity of games for PCs as opposed to games for consoles to chart-toppers, nor am I including the large mash of flops that no-one ever bothers with, or shareware games that are made no matter what the market demands.
Varsity is right. I hate games that are dumbed down (or toned down) for PC because they feel the need to publish for the console kiddies (not I'm not talking about you). Deus Ex 2 was a major disappointment, before it began to take shape I thought it might be the Half-Life 2 killer like Deus Ex 1 was a Half-Life killer, but then they announced it would be for Xbox. At that point I knew the interface would suck, the graphics would be ported from an Xbox, and a bunch of other inconsistencies would occur. Halo PC was also a great disappointment. Don't get me wrong, but Gearbox fudged Halo up badly with their additions and relatively poor net code. They made it so the fuel rod gun > all. And what happened to my Warthog's physics? Really the only good console ports I've played are Grand Theft Auto III and Vice City.
Umm, you realize the first Deus Ex was almost a commercial flop? It reached out to the gamers but it didn't let casual gamers get real involved because it took a long time to get anything decent.
Don't be so quick to judge the DX2 was dumbed down just because of the fact that it was on Xbox.
Also, i've noticed Console games can get a lot more in depth then PC games (as of late)...like Metroid Prime. You can run through Prime, barely doing anything plot related or you can meander along and read EVERY single entry, like I did.
I love my classic consoles, but after the Dreamcast, no console has seemed worth my money. I've had my Gamecube for over a year, I got five games around the time I bought it, and haven't bought any titles since. None of the consoles have anything that appeal to me, and the titles that DO appeal to me, are either ports of PC games, or have ports TO the PC. Sure, there might be one or two titles, but they are hardly worth paying for a whole other console just to play. And considering all the things a PC can do, spending money on one doesn't seem like a waste of money.

I can’t really say about COD as I’ve only played the demo, but I find it hard to believe that you can get the same structured, realistic game play flow with endless grunts to shoot at.

Point missed entirely.

I can't even begin with that one.
I guess while you're all playing that new FPS with the shinier shotgun, I'll be with my dumbed-down kids toys. Hey, more fool you.
Last I saw most of the console games in the charts were a decent mix, as was the PC listings =/
Are you seriously basing your stance off an actual knowledge of the currently available games or are you just assuming?
edit: eep! flint! you fast poster XD
Point taken. But then that does beg the question: if there was a one-or-the-other choice ... what would your choice be ?

I'll just blame consoles if it's all the same to you. They ruined DX for me. It's my party. I'll cry if I want to.
*sulks*
As for innovation and depth on the PC, I quite agree. There's nothing around at the moment which is screaming: buy me now ! I'm different ! I'm proud ! I'm replayable after 2 minutes !
3D adventure, platformer or fighting game = console
FPS, RTS = PC
As for other genres I missed out it'd really depend on the controls needed. I'm sure you get the point already though =3

I'm looking at the sort of games you would find in an average gamer's collection. That isn't limited to the charts or likely to include total flops.
Marry me, we'll go live in the woods and care not what the others think.
conjecture or assumption is nice but it's not a good basis for proving a point. I'm not being mean, or at least I'm not trying to be but if you're gonna argue this particular point it'd be a good idea to bring solid evidence to the table. I can't say I've exactly went out of my way to provide any myself for my part but I do at least check the charts down at our local 'game' store (the company also owns electronics boutique) on a fairly regular basis. Charts we can talk about, but 'average gamers' and their collections is kinda just subjective unless you start throwing statistics about ^^;

OK, I'll rephrase. I am not limting my observations on the relative complexity of games for PCs as opposed to games for consoles to chart-toppers, nor am I including the large mash of flops that no-one ever bothers with, or shareware games that are made no matter what the market demands.

But in many cases you could say it was.
And if you dont believe me go look back at the archived posts in the offical DX2 forums. Right before and after its release date.
Ive never seen so much mutual hatred from such hardcore fan boys in my life.
