Cfac389's commander console

i'm gonna try to have it so that instead of destroying the console itself, the aliens will have to destroy the wires holding it up, and if they do, it'll fall into the lava

A cool idea, but I can't think of a reason to have a security station suspended above a lava pit, can anyone else?

That's a good point, but if we wen't by logic in every game we have, there would never be those ever important, highly strategic gameplay staples like..!

Bottomless Pits
Endless Jumping "Puzzles" over the said pits
Key/Switch Located Remotely from The Door
Impossible to Defeat Bosses Happily Locating Themselves Over/Under a Highly Dangerous [insert thing here]
You Will Always Be the Only One Left
Ammunition Can Be Carried In Large Amounts Without Any Container
Clips Will Always Be Full
and the list goes on....any other ideas?

Good idea, but I think the room itself could use some work. Detail-wise. The walls look like they could use some more structural detail. That's what I'd concentrate on here: the walls. I would actually make the whole room a bit bigger just to give the commander some room to build things, and make to it more interesting to defend. Then concentrate on making the walls less "cubed". You could do anything... add pipes, add supports or pillars, add computers on the walls.

Overall I think the room is just too plain. I do like your idea about the lava though, regardless of whether or not it makes sense.

good idea. Yeah you gotta work on those walls, and i don't think the commandstation looks like one, make it a bit more high-tech?

well, i worked in the pipes, but the command console is still pretty much the same, but i just really liked this shot of the broken steam pipe...

You've obviously never been to my house Hectate...

The pic of that steam coming from the pipe is really great althogh I don't think it will be enough to break up the 'cuniness' of the room. Its defnately a good start though.

Sounds like a cool idea, but it has a major flaw - how are you going to make the command console fall? It's a fixed object. You could always use env_renders, I suppose...but then the console will still be there.

Instead of the command console falling make the lava/molten stuff rise, perhaps the aliens could interupt or reverse the flow by smashing some pipes etc

Looks like Q2. bleh.

not a fan of the commander console in such a ridiculous location either.

I just have one question:

Won't this give the aliens a severe advantage, and totally change the tactics for this map? Instead of the commander console being really hard to destroy, all they have to do is rush 5 or 6 Bob's there via back routes and manage to get only one or two in there to snap the cables and -boom- the game is over. Or are these cables gonna be extremely hard to snap as well?
• Terawatt_99Terawatt_99 Join Date: 2002-02-09 Member: 188Members
well, yes the cables will be dificult to destroy, and the way i'm planning on doing the console, if it's a brush entity, i'll just have the console entity just barely above the actual console, but it will be straight black, and on rendermode additive, so that it will look like the console is falling, but the console is actually still in the same place... (i think that's how it would work... )

Except that the commander will be "in" the command console. So when the platform falls, the command console will still be there, and the commander will still be active. Or if the aliens decide to attack the command center, they could destroy it but it would still look like it's there. As cool as this idea may be, the current fgd and entity setup will not allow it.

And the steam in that pic: I can't really tell where it's coming out of.

it's OK, not that great.

you could do better. i mean come-on, lava? why? thats not very orignal.

lava = not original, lava + command console = original

damn... the more i think abvout it, the more i realise that it's not really possible... oh well, i can still dream....
