    Steam updates last night took an age to come through with many 'fail connection' 'lost connection' and 'this game is not currently available', not just for me but for many people. Most of the issues seem to be resolved now but it really was a pretty poor show by valve, again. For a peice of software designed for software distribution and marketing it ironically falls flat on its face in both those departments.

    For those still trying to sort out the mess you have my sympathies.

    Let the anti-steam Haiku begin.

    Steam is slow today.
    The large update frightens us.
    My forehead is bruised.

    Yesterday I tried to play games,
    but Steam only was teh lames.
    While I waited, I ate some pie,
    now Steam has started to lie.
    It claims that my connection is buggy,
    though only Steam is sucky.
    I wonder if my account is gone,
    "Oh Steam, what hast thou done?!".
    I panicked and reinstalled it,
    now I would need a medkit.
    You ruined HL, evil Steam,
    I'd fry you in a laserbeam.

    (Has Steam claimed that your account doesn't exist anymore? It did that to me <!--emo&:angry:--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/mad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='mad.gif' /><!--endemo--> )

    Steam has broken itself...
    Whereas before it
    <img src='http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v83/Mjki3se2/SteamCrash.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />
    on exit, and also left a HL process running when I exited HL, now its getting connection errors. And if I don't get a connection error I get:
    <img src='http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v83/Mjki3se2/Steamerror.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />
    Which is weird, since I only installed Steam one more time than I uninstalled.

    Its FUBAR.

    a few hours yesterday I could understand... but why does steam STILL not work, 24 hours later? <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Cause everybody is downloading. If you go to their homepage www.steampowered.com, you'd see the pictures don't even load. Their bandwidth is overloaded. Sometimes I wonder if they considered how many people would have to download the new steam when they make an update, because I think if they even had the slightest hint of an idea of this concept, they would have placed the new update on other servers for downloading as well.

    I guess this is why they want to add a p2p system to Steam -- to prevent things like this...

    a day without Steam
    like sixteen angry gorges
    spits upon my soul
  • eagleceaglec Join Date: 2002-11-25 Member: 9948Members, Constellation
    the p2p thing was a nasty rumour. The official statement was that steam would allow the distribution and control of p2p games, not that HL would be made p2p.
    In other words they may at a point in the future release a p2p game and distribute, advertise and control it via steam. It is not likely until steams reputation fades a bit though.
