When Steam Updated For You.

Steam - Updating -100%
Me:NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Steam has been updated
Me:What the?? You mean downgraded.
Steam has funky update errors. Negative updates?
After the hours of pain and suffering, Steam updates. Luckly I could run a game with it updating using 25% of CPU(Pentium 4 2.66 GHZ!)And a few other apps while it updated
They even forget to fix the simple errors. Spacing.
Note I woke up in the night having a nightmare that steam would go nuts while updating, just to see 97%, so I sat there. Waiting, and waiting and waiting. 35 minutes later...
Does it take them that long to get a update that can be fitted into a small compressed file that uses less than 100 MB? Because if a dial up user waits for this download, its going to be a 3 day download for him
That was what I posted in Svencoop forums
Thats what happened.

Steam's MAIN Problems are these:
1) The Client dosn't look around for the best content server and then try to connect. Instead it seems to pick on at random and then stay there (thus certain servers get overloaded and other ones are just fine)
2) It takes a hard Reboot to force steam to switch content server (I did 3 reboots last night and on the third on I downloaded the patch in a few mins)
3) It seems that their Webserver is probably the same server as the conneciton server (thus if steam is down steampowered.com is down also)
I know steam is working in some degree atm (as I can refresh about 30 Steam NS servers), however other then that I can not touch steam.
oh well, lets go play flash games <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

It downgraded itself for me sometime today.
Now its completely FUBAR, not slightly bugged.
I only bash steam when it doesn't work and I'm annoyed by it.
...Dammit. For a second I thought it worked... Meh, I'll try again later.
EDIT: Well, Steam's running. Can't play any games though, I get this message box when I try:
<img src='http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v83/Mjki3se2/Steamerror.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />
EDIT(2):Going to nuke the cached games and mods and try again. Maybe that'll fix it...
EDIT(3)Removed HL, and re-installing. At one point I had 3.4 Mb/s download rate <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif' /><!--endemo-->
EDIT(4)Still fails with the above error message.

o_O
(but it did, so i'm happy)
Let me guess what was running through the minds of the DDoS'er at this time was
"OMG STEAM SUCKS!!! I CAN'T PLAY COUNTER-STRIKE ON WOM OMG STEAM IS FULL OF SPYWARE OMG VALVE SUCK UP TO MICROSOFT VALVE SUCK VALVE SUCK......... etc etc"
Seriously when it works Steam will be superb. And anyway Steam is a better and more secure WON anyway, I don't know what your all worrying about.
We need to find these people and visit them with baseball bats.
The one thing I am confuzeled about:
How hard is it to defend against a DDoS attack?
I mean, on the release of Steam this happened also, you would think they would expect it now.....
But now I get some strange error I cant get rid of, and cant connect to anything, except FRIENDS LIST.
Is it that one, Xodlike?
I recommend against attempting to re-install steam. It now has the following error on start up;
<img src='http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v83/Mjki3se2/SteamFatalError.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />
EDIT:I got a new version of the steam installer off the steampowered.com website and its updated.
EDIT(2):Its sucessfully logged in and updated again. Now to reaquire HL.
EDIT(3): HL works. Now to re-install the mods.

Not for the previous two bugs I had encountered:
Half Life process not exiting when I exit the program,
Steam crashing on exit.
Mind you, they weren't all that bad.
As for the multiple installs, the only change was a large steam update.
I will concede that the problem with the re-install could well be my computer. Or equally with Steam itself, or the Auth / content servers, I just don't know.
EDIT:It appears that the installer I got off the Ozforces mirror was to blame.
Fixed now, I just played some NS ^_^ Now Im afraid to logout and shutdown my comp, what if steam refuses to login again.

There is no way to defend against that attack. The attack comprises of <b>many</b> computers executing countless requests on the server at one time, which eventually overloads the server, making it unavailable to anyone.
GAH ill upload pic later
Thats what I got after the update when wanting to play HL... only happened once...
