Make ns look a ton better!!!!
Ok here is the run down.
Soylent green has put together an ublelievable detail texture pack. It makes all NS prefixed maps look AWESOME. For some screenshots goto this thread.
Here is the download:
TexturePack
Instructions:
To install, please extract the contents as sg stated in the readme. Then, goto your
C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\"your email address"\half-life\nsp
directory. Now, open notepad and insert the following:
r_detailtextures "1"
Now, hit "save as" then browse to the
C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\"your email address"\half-life\nsp
directory, then the name will be userconfig.cfg and the save as type will be "all files".
Now when you start up the game it will look a ton better!!
I take 0 credit for anything, if the authors of this intillectual property wish it to be removed it will be. Thank them for all of the hard work, again goto that thread for more info, etc.. Have fun!

Comments
1) download file
2) open/create userconfig.cfg in your ns beta folder, add r_detailtextures "1"
Of course, RivaTuner can fix that, but when I use that, it lags very badly.

Probably not, as it takes a beast of a video card to run it. It could be an option, but not a standard feature.
Anyway, according to the readme that comes with the pack, it was designed for the maps eclipse and hera, so those are the first two I fired up. In either one, the first thing you should do is get to a hive and switch the details on and off a few times. The difference in the look of the infested stuff is overwhelming. It's really where these things shine.
I was kind of disappointed by looking at floors made of that diamond brushed steel, because the thread linked to here gave me the impression those would look different. I guess they aren't quite finished with that one. From the look of the example, the development is well underway, and we should have prettier floors in short order.
The effect on eclipse was very positive. Looking at the TSA logos on the walls really brings out the differences this thing makes, and the changes to the floor show up in all the right spots.
The effect on hera... not so much. It isn't because of the textures themselves, though, they look very good. The problem is that, in my opinion, the textures are somewhat mismatched with what they've been placed onto. The result is that things in general look more real, but not necessarily any better. In the ready room for example, in the portion with the glowing stripes on the floor, I think there are too many lines added to the big metal blocks that jut out of the corners. (In fairness, that texture does look good in most other places where it's used on hera.) Also, the other new wall textures make the rooms look sort of messy in ways that aren't appropriate to some parts of the map. In my opinion, those parts of Hera which aren't infected should look very new, to give it sort of a sterile, austere feeling. The new pitted, bumpy look doesn't fit that. However, there's another texture in this very pack which probably would fit quite well, I think. I didn't see it in so many places, and the only place I remember seeing it is one of the other maps, actually.
The effect of this pack on ns_nancy is very, very nice. For whatever reason, I actually saw more of the new things here than the other two, and almost all of them are excellent. The only thing that didn't seem to fit was what it did to the white doors, which I suspect is an unintended consequence, given that this thing isn't for nancy anyway. Many of the walls in nancy already have an old, weather-beaten look to them, as though the ship were falling apart in the first place. So, the pitted look that the main wall texture brought to most of it was very effective at enhancing the ambience. That other texture I mentioned, which I think would be good for fixing up hera, also makes a good appearance here. There's a few doorways, boxes, and other places where this one texture is used that looks to me like brushed steel or something similar. On nancy, it stands out in contrast from the rest, and makes the places where it shows up look much better. I think this texture would be much better as the main wall texture in ns_hera.
I dont think it makes them look right however. NS maps are mostly made of metal. This gives it a rough texture that makes it look like stone. It makes hive rooms look much better however.
I'll reserve my judgement until the final version is released.

some of the mappers are going over thier maps and adding detailed textures, so if not "officially" in the game,
the makers of the official maps will release packs.
GOOD:
Much greater detail in many textures.
The infestation looks so good now, I avoid touching it whenever possible for fear that some gunk will get stuck to my boots!
BAD:
Some detail textures don't match (this has been addressed).
For most maps, some textures are detailed while others are not. The impression is an uneven one. This might not be a bad thing; it's just that the new detailed textures look too good next to un-detailed ones.
The mini-changelog and download is over here:

I just got a knew machine (featuring a 256 9800 XT Pro) and was ready to put it on the front lines against the best 3d offense. Seeming as HL2 is STILL not out yet, the only thing I find myself using it for regularly is NS, and sadly it does not yield much of an improvement. NS should include these (or better) newer textures for those of us who are more "graphically privaleged" but still keep it as an option for those who are on "graphical welfare". It'd be nice to feel that I'm getting maximum usage out of a card I payed dearly for!
I say give NS a face lift!
