How in the heck can bump mapping take absolutly no computing power to produce?

AFAIK Bump mapping just shades pixels, and every resource I have looked at says it does not bog down performance and adds no polies. How can such a beatiful thing take no rendering time?

Oh it takes rendering time. NOTHING is free as they say, and this includes nifty rendering effects. However it does take far far less rendering time than it would to actually make the polies out of what the bump mapping gives you an illusion of. :P

Actually, it all depends on the type of bump mapping, and mainly, YOUR PROCESSOR.

Bump mapping, while it has to be enabled by your graphics card, is a processor intensive render. And yes, it does bog down a lot of systems(for instance- mine has trouble with Deus Ex Invisible War, because my processor is a P4 2.0ghz, even with my GeForceFX5600 256mb)
