The News

getting depressing...
Every couple of days we hear about some terrorist attacks and I can tell you it gets depressing fast. The sad thing is this will never end, just think about it. Israel was getting bombed every other day for a while after 911 it seemed and all of a sudden americans think terrorism is due to 911. This may be one of the reasons, but Isreal has been under threat of terrorist attacks for as long as it's short creation. Same thing in the 90's, we had the olympic bombings..80's in germany the Baader Mein Hoff gang was terrorizing our bases over their. Not to mention the Isreal olympic team was killed by another middle east terrorist group and an airliner was hijacked and luckily successfully rescued. The list could go on into caveman times, though the methods do get a tad-bit cruder. The media can't wait to throw news of the latest bombing into our face and I'm not seeing an end to that depressing area.
Murders are the second hottest item it seems on the TV. I come home and turn on the TV and see pictures of a guy who may have killed his pregneat wife. Great. Or even better some celebrity child molesters ( I know not proven), like I wanna hear about that on the way to work or about Martha Stewert being convicted on all these charges The only good news is that some kid in asia (always in asia it seems in the news) fell down a well and was luckily saved in time before a monsoon. Good for him, but I still picture that poor guy in the dark, damp well and put myself in his postition. Maybe I am just a depressed person, but is anyone else getting tired of all the bad news?

I don't think anyone likes bad news, but its the stuff that makes the headlines. These shock stories "Nearly 150 killed by bomb" are the stuff that makes the papers sell. What the papers sell, the news programs broadcast, because they don't want to be left behind.

Like it or not, as long as the newspapers are driven by money, bad news will always be the headline.

There is a saying, it also happens to be a pun, but it is quite appropriate.

    No News Is Good News.

its more appropriate if you put it the other way round,
    good news is no news.

Z.X. Bogglesteinsky is right on there, which newspaper would you buy "hundreds killed in bomb attack!" or "puppys born!" ?

its just a sad fact that all the good things that happen are small and so are deemed insignificant, and a lot of the abd things are big and so are deemed important :/

The good news is only presented if it has something to do with money, like all those pointless nanotech articles in magazines like Fortune that said how much money it would make "nano-this, nano-that" and rendered the poor term bloated and useless! I'm sick of it really, knowing that the media selectively presents only the news the corporation that owns them wants the people to see (think).

The only way you can truly know something anymore is to see it for yourself.

Just stop watching the TV if its so depressing. Most of the stuff on it is crap anyway so your not missing much.

That's self-contradictory. What hits the headlines is what people want to hear, because the request for those news is what makes newspapers put it on their headlines. The reason there's more money in bad news is because people BUY the papers with bad news.

I think another point that's important to consider is location. It's my impression that media in USA are more focused on such "mob-feeding" news than they are here in Denmark, where I live, because I don't really see that many murders and terrorist attacks on the headlines. Of cause, I've never really followed the american media, so I might just be plain wrong

People are interested in them but don't actually like them. That's why they're called bad news :/

Kind of the same thing. Seems people are interested in unpleasant things. Same reason people watch horror movies I guess (never got the point in that )

I refuse to believe that people have interest in random murder episodes. I bet no one remembers who killed who a few days ago. I think people who buy papers for the murders read them for entertainment, not to get news from the world.

I do, but not in a sick twisted sense. I have always been fascinated by the mental make-up of the person who can kill his entire family and then sit down and read the newspaper with a glass of OJ.

Lotta people die everyday, but I know of atleast a couple murders that hit the headlines. Sad news as always...

Hooray for human nature. All I hear about on the news is bad news, very rarely do I hear good news and most of the time its something very small and insignificant. Unfortunately, there does seem to be more bad than good in the world today, but if they ever found a cure for cancer or AIDS, or came in first contact with an Extraterrestial (peaceful) Life Form, then It would make headline news (of course, and Evil ET would make headline news too)

    Very true.

But you're not looking for that mental make-up in the news, are you?

Not directly, but it is where I can hear about it. If I am really bored I can even listen to some expert talk about it. May not be in a newspaper, but it sometimes can find it's way into the news
