But if your aligning segment of the map...then that is done on the grid??

Nope, there's no extrude function, you'll have to do pretty much everything by hand. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->
It's really not that hard when you get into it more, eventually you'll be able to do things without even thinking about it. Then the only boundry is your imagination.... and the Half-Life engine. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->
*steals the HL 3 engine*
WEWT!
*don't we all wish....*
Hammer doesn't have an extrude function, but I believe Quark lets you extrude along a path.
