Mapping Question

<div class="IPBDescription">Is it possible to...</div> Ok, as some of you may know, I work on my maps in 2 ways.

When possible, I use my dad's PC, which is my MAIN mapper (has HL, NS, and STEAM on it)

However, at school I have some spare time (like study hall) so I can work on it there via my lap top... only problem is, I currently can't put HL/NS/STEAM on it due to memory restrictions (I might be able to in about 2 months... but I'm working on the school web-page via my lap-top cause I'm representing the school at a computer show)

So, my question is:

Can I transfer a map FROM my lap top TO my dad's PC, touch it up and add entities and the like, bring it BACK to my laptop, work on it some more, and then go BACK to my dad's PC to compile (when it's ready)?

I would do the entities on my lap top... but I can't since I dun have NS/HL/STEAM installed... 0o"

Yeah sure if all you want to do is edit it then use the .rmf or .map and you can swap it over and back.as long as you have something to swap it over and back on.

Easiest way I can figure would be to open up the .map file, write down all the text onto a sheet of paper, then re-type it all back out into another .map file on your other computer <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->.

either that or use a disk

-just make sure you have the same wads that you use on both computers.

    Laugh much moconner?

Anyway, I does this often between home and work. I don't have HL installed at work but I keep a copy of all necessary mapping files and just transfer my .rmf files through email. Of course, that's much easier with a high speed connection.

Just use a website, make a zip file and stick the lights.rad and .rmf in it, upload it to the website, then redownload it once you are on the other computer. If you don't already have a web host just use 250free.com, they are pretty reliable and I use them for my sig and stuff. Only possible drawback is that they have an upload limit, meaning you can't upload really large files. But making a zip or rar archive can shrink the files down enough.

erm.. wait... can I transfer the SPECIFIC files I need to add entities and such to my laptop? As in, be able to make entities WITHOUT installing HL/NS/STEAM <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif' /><!--endemo-->

If so, that'd be freaking AWSOME dude!

As far as I know, all you need are the .wad files that you have specified in VHE to view your map. Half-life (or Steam for that matter) are not required to make the map, just to run the compiled version.

Also, you need the NS .fgd to map. But surely you know that by now. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' /><!--endemo-->

<!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> But what I mean is, what do I need to add entities? I've got the WAD's and .fgd file on the laptop, but all I can do is MAP... no entities can be added 0o"

Then you don't have the .fdg because that is what WC pulls the entity list from.

You sure you have WC setup correctly?

Yeah, the .fgd is what is required to place entities. I'm not quite sure I understand your problem. Are you saying you can't place point entities and can't make world brushes into entities?

    Heh, forgot somthing?

Anyway, when you set up hammer/WE the area where you put in all the file locations really only has to do with if you compile the map from inside hammer/WE.
All you should need to do is place the .fgd .map (or rmf) and hammer/WE. Double check that you have it set up right, make sure you specified the right path to the .fgd etc etc.
