Valve Downloading Horrendous Amounts Of Data?

<div class="IPBDescription">*Shify eyes</div> Looks at D:

2 days ago, it was at 2 gig free, now it's at 1 gig free

*Shiftey eyes*

>.>
<.<

Nope, haven't moved around any porn, warez, or any other good stuff. What could it be?

*remembers a few days ago

*Port opens up steam to play a game.

BUY CONDITION ZERO!!!! YOU WILL BE LEETZORZ FOR BUYINGZORS THE GAMZORS YOU L33T HAXOR HOGGY MUFFIN BOLSHEVEKS COMMIE BUTTERCAKES!

*Port's nose begins bleeding as he hits the close button.

They'd better not start this crap.

*Today

The connection is going, but no p2p traffic, the backbone traffic is down...

*Clikity, clikity, telnet opens, klikity, console cable into the router, klikitiy, login, Debug all, copy to text file, klikity klikity, goto lunch.

*Half a homemade pizza, router reboot, 10 meg log file off of the router and some long **** searches later

Traffic with valves ip? WTH?

*Goes into the files, begins looking around.

Why has it loaded counterstrike and and condition zero without my permission?

*Plays with interface, right clicks on condition zero, finds it 89% completed, with a buy now button there.

*Ports ears and nose begin bleeding.

Not only has it offended me with advertising and marketing, but it has also tried to eat a gigabyte of my harddisk space and set off the *Haxor in my system again* alarm.

Moral of the story: Valve crashes a lot, reboots, occasionally updates and crashes more, uses up a bunch of memory, and then downloads gigs of advertising to your harddisk. If only B3 didn't use steam...

Sadly, if you read the user agreement, the software section, you will see that by installing you have agreed to let them install anything steam related ("Steam Software") automatically, and according to the first sentence, it is required that you install it. I liked steam up until this. Now I have two games I do not want, and NS crashes antime I try to quit, and vavle is allowed to fill my hard drive with anything they say is steam related.

    As I have 1.2 TB's of space, I really couldn't care <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Er.. you CAN tell Steam not to download any game data. You know... that thing in 'options' labelled 'do not keep up to date'. Then just purge its cache. Works for those who might want the stuff (aka: their target audience) while minorly inconveniencing those who just want to play the games they have now (aka: a non-profit asset).

They gotta think with their checkbooks, and making it more convenient for those who DO want to buy their software takes precedence.

Actually, even with that option selected, Steam <i>will</i> still download both. I know this because it did it to me several times.

You can stop it from DLing CS:CZ but obviously if it's already finished DLing it, you're a little late. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

There was a popup message when it started DLing it. Perhaps you should read those things. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

when it starts DLing, you can click the properties and turn auto-download off. You can then delete the content you have.

Steam itself will still autoupdate but the games won't.

While you can, how the hell am I susposed to know it will download a locked placefiller in the firstplace... On the cost of the other mods not updating... People have payed halflife to use the service to describe so it's not entirely non-profit. I'm sure Valve would shut it down if it were..
Also while the TOS allows them to do anything to our computer and takes no blame this is just wrong.

Yes many of us have run into Steams ugly head more than once.
While I think that Steam is groundbreaking and a great Idea.
Valve did a **** poor job of setting it up. >_<
sometimes I would love to just....
    <!--emo&::asrifle::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/asrifle.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='asrifle.gif' /><!--endemo--> . . . . . . VALVE
CZ isn't going to be any good, I predict that CS will still be the most played game of all time when CZ comes out.
But I do think that CZ may take second or third.
just because of the fact its CS related and some ppl have no brains!

Remaining size on harddrive has nothing to do with size.

    The function works like this:

Effective space left = Discspace --> 0 when x goes to infinity x = (Total Discspace * Hours Spent * Internet speed) / Actual life

Not that no life means your harddrive is always full <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    *Checks discspace...*

just right click on the game in the steam games window and hit options, there you can choose to stop downloading if it is, you can also tell it to delete everything to do with that game already installed.

CZ is basically CS rehashed... Same game, new skins, new maps, nothing else.

It's the same game with better graphics. So will all CS players just move to it and get on with their CS lives, or stay with good ole free CS?

There was a nice popup window before it started downloading saying "We will be pre-sending this to everyone unless you specifically set it not to". That's how you are supposed to know. Once again, reading is a key skill.

Does this have anything to do with NS? (No.) Then why's it in NS General?

Are these the Steam forums? (No. Those can be found at www.steampowered.com.) Then why are we complaining about Steam here?
