To avoid potential hijack issues, can week 3 of the Zen questions have no harming of trees?

    'fraid that's impossible, I think it's a basic to the Zen concept that trees have to get hurt <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Of cause, one could ponder over the reasons why those Zen stories involve trees as targets of violent actions, so I will:

    I think trees have a power in the Zen stories because they are everywhere. Try walking somewhere out your door. As long as you are not living in a slum in some major city, you will quickly meet a tree. And it makes sense to use what is near you and what is natural for your destructive examples when you happen to be a Zen master with a supposed message.

    ...There's a giant field outside my window...no trees there. I think a rock would be far more common. Or water (although it's not solid, so it's not applicable in many situations).

    I'd also like to point out that shaking a tree and shooting a tree wont kill a tree (unless it's a really young - or small - tree).

    Trees, of course being classic examples of psycho-symbology for both fathers and phalluses (don't ask me, my old man doesn't look like a .....um....you know) this clearly illustrates the Zen master's attempt to overcome their own base desires, and a rejection of the need for the approval of an authority figure. Also explains why they are all dirty little sado-maso self abusers. Or something.

    I think this topic was, by mere presense, derailed from the very first post.
