If you have a very large room, with a lot of lighting then facelights will take a long time. The hammer compiler is not ideal at all.

Basicly it's trying to compile the lights, and you have a leak somewhere. "Boxing" -- creating a huge cube thast covers the entire map is not always advisable. However, will small maps it will work.
Oh no it wouldn't. First of all, the minimap for the spectator would be messed up. The map would lag twice as much, since it has to render twice as much. It will use up valuable clipnodes and lightdata, not to mention it'll take weeks to compile. Do not, ever, ever(!!) release a map with a box around it.

Anywhere from 1 minute to 24 hours depending on the machine, the map, and how much else is going on in the background (e.g. websurfing on the machine doing the compile).
Check out the sticky threads for BC setup.
